Beethoven WIP

so I am starting this thread as I am doing a Beethoven bust to try the textures tools in Mudbox.


Everything but the head modeling is super wip but here you go.

The head was started from Oglu's base mesh which you can download from the mudbox webpage.

Cheers dude, I'll probably go with bump map on this one.
I may do a textured version of the hair on planes to have a decent representation in Mudbox, but if I go fully rendered I'll need to do them properly
Has anyone found a way to get a fake sss in mudbox? It'd be cool to have this in real time.

cool ! I did a Beethoven inspired sculpt last year and it was a LOT of fun.
I didn`t into sculpting the hair too much, something I should revive again (:

If you go for a likeness it seems your eyes are too thin and wide.
The nose, mouth, chin ratio seems a bit off, making the lower half of the face seem long.
It also feels like the cheeks and chin volumes are too bulky but that could be related to the proportions.

There are a lot of different Beethoven paintings, sculpts out there ...I used these as my main reference ... your reference may vary (:





The first one is a painting by Stieler I believe, the second one I don`t know about the artist.

Nice update! I agree on Flo´s comments about the face.
About sss on mudbox, I think all you can do is playing with incandescence maps and tweaking the litsphere shaders to your likeness (but I´m afraid there is no way to get it look like real sss, or someone proof me wrong ).

Thanks for the feedback Flo! Yeah I have been using a few different references, paintings and sculptures but didn't stick to a specific ones as they sometimes look quite different from each others.
I 'll go back to the lower part of the face proportions like you said Flo, definitely some room for improvement there.

Thanks Manuel for the tip, yeah I am sure it won't look as good as real sss but would be nice to get a rough feel of it.

Hehe no worries, everything is recorded so far
Here is an update on the face, messing around with proportions and throwing some temp hair in there. Still not happy with 3 quater and side views so here is a front one
