Using Tgen I made a couple of maple style trees (not the stock tree Tgen comes with). I created the bark texture from some photo reference. I randomized the trees, and saved about 6 different versions to separate models. Then in SI2011.5, I Made a simple ICE pointcloud and shape instanced the trees, driving the rate with a weight map on a medium res grid. I did the same with the grass, but it looks terrible and will do something else to break up the ground. ground texture is a photo i tiled in PS

Then with sIBL_GUI from Kel Solar, I used a stock HDR to set up the daylight scene. sIBL_GUI is great I could never have lit this test in Mental Ray w/out it. I may try to do a more dusk/sunset type scene and fire in the middle, but this is looking pretty cool

So the composition has some issues - mainly from the bad drawing I was following. Want to try to make the alien bigger, but the foreground guy is fighting that. May add another alien (duplicate, but different pose) in the background and move this one closer, or change the shot to be closer to either the humans or alien for more action. This is a bit more of a sweeping shot (dual monitor ratio), but gives a lot to look at.

Default alien invades nudist colony

They will eventually be clothed... of course. (does this need a nudity warning?) In all of these, I'm more interested in an overall action/movie-esque shot, rather than a staged illustrative shot of the interaction, if that makes sense. The baby is starting to get lost a bit. I think if its going to be a central part of the image, the last image (or at least angle) is best - maybe have the arm extended out to the camera more. Any preferences or suggestions/crits/better ideas welcome.

These three are more like the original sketch, with some slight differences.

Here's one from the opposite angle, for contrast. This is the really wide format. I want to have at least one character close to the camera for detail interest.

Also, ultimately there will be a lot of debris and other artifacts, like coolers, cans, bbq, etc...

Anyone have any thoughts on the strongest camera angle/composition? Or other ideas?

A few more shots. (I did a bunch more layout and render lighting. Going to try to use the lighting from fc_finb, but the composition of fc_fina. Most everything is represented, some things left rough for render times, just need to crank in zb now.

Here are some other tests I did - more dynamic shots, but they seem more difficult to make work. Also, I didn't really want the aliens to look they are being overly aggressive.

Default time for an update

Got back to working on this - thanks for the extension

Started to get some details and colors on the alien. Still real early - going back and forth between SI and ZB, tuning the SSS and disp as I go. I need some reflected light underneath for edge spec... Not sure about the pink.
The HDR is from HDRLabs.

I'm going to have the baby being held by the PJ's, as if the alien doesn't really want to get its hands/fingers dirty, a bit more humorous than the previous shots. cloth done in MarvelousDesigner, then exported as obj

Here is a low res test of the shot, trying to get shadows/sunlight right on the alien - still needs work.
