Default apply grayscale displacment as stamp in mudbox

is there a way to attach a grayscale map onto a brush for sculpting in mudbox so that it pushes and pulls the verts simultaneously?

in zbrush you can bring in a grayscale map as an alpha and set the mid point to 50 and using dragRect you can imprint it on the surface and it will push and pull verts

the only way i've been able to get something like this to work is to create a vector displacement map and use that as my stamp. is there a better way or can you easily convert a grayscale heightmap into a vector displacement?

it should work if you have negative black in the file...
should be possible to shift the range in nuke...

or sculpt on a plane and bake it again...
