Hey guys just a little update here on my skin learning. Did a small face sculpt inspired by Sam Jinks and tried some different techniques and approaches. Let me know what you think!

I think it's a great improvement! I like the addition of the specularity/reflection you have going (the lips especially!). You have some great form and modeling detail in there. Really love it!
As a small crit, the skin surface itself feels a tad bland. I think it would benefit if you increased the bump (or displacement) effect on the pores a tad. Everyone constantly talks about skin shader techniques. To be honest, I'm more interested in your lighting and rendering setup. It's evident to me you have a very good understanding of how to light your models and how it brings out the best in your modeling skills. Any tips or settings you'd be willing to share?

Nice work on this last, it still look a bit waxy to me. it looks like a newborn baby skin, this give a very soften skin, and real human skin is a bit harder.
A good skin is a compromse between Diffuse and SSS, knowing displacement map attenuate the softness of SSS. So it's pretty hard to find the good mix between these 3 component. Be carefull with the specular component too, a Human face has different roughness and specular intensity over each part of the face. The nose is much intense in specular than cheek and things like that, so be sure to match this parameter to get the photorealistic look of the human skin. hope that help. and keep it up. |

Looking awesome.
One thing I'd suggest, you could try adding some blotchy variation to the colour of the face. Some subtle blotchy brown to represent melanin (I guess this is the main thing, I'm not really seeing any melanin, like freckles or age spots or whatever), overall red blotches to represent blood vessels, subtle blue blotches to represent un-oxygenated blood, and perhaps lighter grey/yellow/green blotches to represent areas with less blood-vessels. If you need some more reference, I took some photos of some of his sculptures, not the greatest photography in the world, but still might be useful? http://www.users.on.net/~gjpetch/ref...s/IMG_5689.JPG http://www.users.on.net/~gjpetch/ref...s/IMG_5697.JPG |
