After seeing Tandy and Pascal try 3dcoat, i could resist to give it whirl as well. :) i don't really like the fact that you can't go up and down with the subdvision but anyways maybe after some more try i'll get use to it.
So here is my first test with voxel sculpting. i subdivided the mesh once, the inital sphere had 400k and i subdivided it one times at the end to have some more resolution to work with which gave a mesh at 1.3k .

I like this a lot. Looks very similar with the picture. I don't know how well you check 3d-coat forum but there is a few thing that I should mention to you. While you are working with voxels you can change it to poly surface on fly when you click small square icon in voxel layer window. The maker of 3d-coat has promoised that poly surface up/down resolution feature is coming in near future. So Workflow is something like you first use voxels to sculpt basic shapes and then move to polygons where you can add more detail with up/down button. And if you already knew this...sorry :)

This is getting interesting. A few of the pros here dipping their toes in the 3DC water. I've watched many demos and have been really impressed but was dubious about the workflow and hadn't really seen any sculpts as detailed as existing ZB/Mud works. However, i'm really pleased that some really excellent sculptors such as yourself and others are testing this out. Hopefully now the true potential may be glimpsed.
How are you finding the voxel sculpting tools? Do they behave similarly to ZB/Mud.They certainly look great in the vids i've seen. What about high frequency detailing,is it similar to image based sculpting in Modo or is the detail baked to a normal map in realtime?

thanks guys,
haikalle, thanks for the info man, i didn't know that. That would be a great addition to the features, a button also to reproject the sculpt onto the new retopo mesh would be nice as well :) .
musashidan: I just tested the thing for a couple of hours so far, i'm still not used to the sculpting tool in 3dcoat, i only used the airbrush and the move tools but there are many more brushes. The pose tools is nice too. It's obviously not as good as Zbrush/Mudbox in terms of efficiency of sculpting, but the freedom it gives you is really cool. So i'm looking forward to see how this software will turn out :)
Here is the concept , i painted it in Photoshop :)

interesting character concept collings, and pretty impessive sculpt considering you had only opened the app . Are you going to go full body sculpt in 3DC. It's interesting that yourself and tandy are dabbling. And Pascal's work in 3DC looks really great.
I just wished you could convert a basemesh from another app to voxels and sculpt away. I certainly predict a great future for the app considering the bloke programming it seems to be some kind of one man coding machine with amazing ideas.

I just wished you could convert a basemesh from another app to voxels and sculpt away.
If i'm not mistaken you can definitely do that, import a base mesh and convert it into voxel.

Yes..It's already there.
That is a fine character.

That's certainly good to know as the more i read and watch vids of 3DC the more i'm beginning to seriously consider using it.

Great stuff collings, is that all photoshop?
Caravaggio is one of my favourite painters, my only comment would be about the contrast, that's what I love about those painters. The Clair obscur :)
Nice! and refreshing to see 2d artworks too.

I know this is probely a basic question but what are those number next to the colour dots?
Are they the settings for RGB?
collings
25-01-2010, 12:16 PM
pascal, yes the angle was more or less as sharp in the photo ref.
Tom, yes that the percentage of the saturation and the brightness of the color sample. I'm doing that to learn how to get corect value to my shadow/ mid color and highlight . That's quite interesting to do so on all the paintings i'm learning from as i can put them in relation and find "basic" theories or rules from that.

some really nice sketches and paintings collings! My critique on the paintings would just be color choice. It'd be really nice to see a play between warms and cools (your palette seems mostly warm) as light and shadows are contrast between the two.
The paintings by Yuqi Wang demonstrate this very well:

Very cool!

thanks pascal, the model had some fine muscles definition actually. and when the arms is fully extended the triceps tend to be contracted as well hence the very defined shape. His forearms for instance was bigger then what i did.
I don't have the photo reference anymore but maybe magda saved it on his usb-stick. if she did i'll ask her to post it here :)

I think where the triceps are contracted at the juncture with the elbow ligament looks a little too far forward and possibly a little too far to the outside of the arm to me but I guess the reference tells the story. Also the abdominal muscles seem a bit flat and dominant without an underlying rib cage form support imho. Apologies for crits on your sketchbook thread :notWorthy:

I do have some crit, if you don't mind, and to be hornest it is a bit hard to judge without your reference, but. I think his ear is to low, and his jaw is to big and square, and the shape of the back of his head looks a bit off as well.

This time around we were lucky enought to have 2 models for this week session. having to draw 1 model is difficult so you can easily imagine how challenging it was to draw 2 models in such short time poses. It turns out quite ok even if in almost all the poses i haven't been able to draw fully the 2 figures. Like i've been told , it should pays off. Next session we will be back with 1 model so hopefully i feel more comfortable.

yes it's a paintover, i used a image of fresh meat though to make the red flesh in the neck. with another passe of paint-over on top of it .
The hair on the chuppacabras designs are also hand painted. like actually the over all color of the body. which is painted just over the zbrush render in photoshop.
nice thread nic, like the paint over dude, and congratulate for first day @ Blurclap
