This is an updated version of the R2 I did for the Star Wars Complete Visual Dictionary, re-textured and rendered with Maxwell v.2. The model and textures were based on reference measurements and photos taken of three original R2's in the Lucasfilm Archives. The Tantive IV corridor section seen in the background was also built from blueprints of the original set. The shot loosely matches a scene from the opening of Star Wars, but is not a recreation, per se. Just an homage :) Click here for full 2k-res version. (http://www.mikeverta.com/Posts/R2_Tantive.jpg)
And here are just a bunch more shots of him:

This is awesome. congrats. Whats inside R2? hehehehe
Very nice dirty metal... congrats...
I don't have the movie right now under my eyes but for the background scene, i think that there's many different "white" (the door, the wall everything is white but sometimes cream white, sometimes grey white...).Juste a suggestion i'm not really sure of that memory...

Wow :) Middle of a real serie of R2-D2 photos nobody would be able to tell it's a CG one, attention to the detail in the textures and shaders is brilliant :).

Impressive work. Your translation between reality and 3d is just perfect. At the same time I just discovered that Maxwell is a very serious tool. :)

Thanks for sharing your materials workflow on CGTalk, but can you tell us something about lighting?
Your renders are amazing, yeah MAXWELL FOREVER!

As you can see in the reflection of his black Radar Eye, there are just three milkplex overhead panels, and a small light kicker in front. The overhead light panel materials were built using a standard Maxwell Layered shader, with an emitter node attached, so when it's "lit," it behaves like a backlit plastic panel. The quality of the light is Maxwell's biggest strength, and it required no tweaking, or adjusting. I just repeated what was on set, and it looks like on-set.

Hey
Nice model and render.
Would be nice to see some grey renders and some mesh example, and not just for critic but as an example to others.
Keep up the good work. clap

Hey
Fantastic work! Re-enforced in my mind what a fantastic design R2-D2 is! What this work for one of visual dictonaries? Be cool if this kind of thing would find its way onto a Star Wars blue ray as a turntable or renders. Maybe it has and I don't know.

Thanks for the comments, guys!
Yes, it is an improved version of the one I did for the Complete Visual Dictionary. I may revisit the rest of him (parts, internal components, etc.) which I did for the exploded view and re-render that, at some point as well...

Very nice, I saw the original renders a few years ago on your website along with the animation. It looked like the real thing then and now I not sure where to go with with the superlatives so.....:notWorthy:
I second the request for wireframes. Just don't model a Yoda as it would probably put mine to shame;)
