a quick sculpt of Klaus Kinski to check out the different feel of voxel sculpting and the brushes of 3dcoat

is that a 3dcoat sculpt ? what are the differences ?

Very good sculpt ;)

Nice 3d sketch Tandy! Great to see your works here

Cheers!

thanks Matic

the main difference is that you sculpt in voxels. almost like real clay.
there is no mesh, just mass you can deform and sculpt in.

the brushes feel different and only after a while I could find some brushes that behave closer to my favourites in mudbox, and some workflows and techniques dont work that well anymore.
for example if you smooth and pinch, flatten etc. in mudbox it somehow still reacts to the underlying edge flow and it seems I was using this a lot as it feels very different now
on the other hand you get a lot of freedom in sculpting as you are so independent from a mesh, but you really have to get used to it, but that was, what this quick sculpt was all about ;)

and its a ressource hog still, the move brush especially takes from half a to a few seconds to recover after, depending on how much voxels you moved.
but its very fun and strangely addictive

Merci Pascal, just attached a small icon for it. :)

looking cool, but i'm still wondering the real advantage of the voxel stuff over zbrush or mudox. Can you go into millions of polys easier ? From what i see in the 3d-coat gallery it's not really impressive, but your test is very good though, makes me want to test it too :)

hi Collings, thanks a lot

well, to be honest I dont know for sure if all of it is worth the hassle (at the moment.)

there is a lot of con`s and pro`s so its not easy to find a verdict
cons:
different brush feeling of what you are used to
no base mesh that you can easily export and change im maya
the ui still fights me, for example when i start a new scene, it doesnt reset the camera so i failed at importing a simple sphere to test some stuff yesterday, as there is no focus on selection etc. so I just could not find it whatever I did, till I found out, the camera stays the same even if I reset the scene.
the resolution I worked with equals 9 million polygons, the brushes are reasonably fast when you are working on normal details, but if you get bigger with them or if you use the move brush, they are getting slow and that is on a quite fast computer home pc, 2gigs of video ram etc.
the workflow that you are used to, producing a base mesh, and working, switching between mubox/maya is not that simple anymore, as you work independent of a basemesh.

for all these cons you get a different and more direct feel of sculpting and complete freedom in what you want to do.
on top of that, all areas have the same resolution, so you wont run into problems resolutionwise on any parts anymore.
and you can copy and paste geometry very very easy.
you have an ear from a previous character? just merge it in, and it welds seamlessly as its just mass as well.
the retopology tool seems quite powerful as well from what I saw but I havent really tested it out.
and the voxel thing is just a small section of the whole program, it seems the programmer is on crack, there is soo much stuff in there, I havent even seen it all yet.

but thats just my first quick and dirty impression of it after using it for 2-3 days a little in my spare time after work, so take it with a big grain of salt ;)

thanks for your feedback man, sounds cool despite all the cons for sketching and finding ideas. :) , i' ll try to test it during the holiday.

and another 3dcoat doodle (well, not 100% 3d coat as I moved it to mudbox inbetween for a moment for some rougher deformation as the move brush is so slooow in 3d coat and it crashed on me several times using it), Juergen Prochnow this time

Pretty cool, and a nice likeness. Interesting work in 3Dcoat, you guys are certainly giving it a workout

really solid sculpting, nice. ive never seen that guy before( the first guy) but the ref is so interesting i might give sculpting him a shot.

Thanks a lot for the comments Joe, Pascal and Tonytrout!

Klaus Kinski is definately a very, very interesting character, legendary for his dedicated performance in movies and even moreso for his freak outs on sets and interviews, check out some youtube videos if you dare. :)

And yeah, guess we are giving 3dcoat a thorough workout at the moment, ;)
the stuff that Pascals dished out with it just looks amazing and shows what is possible in it, with a lot of blood, sweat and tears if you dont give up on it when it behaves like a b**ch again ;)
its an amazing little program, with a strange love and hate mix ;)

Great work and two fantastic actors you chose to sculpt also! Love Fitzcaraldo and Das Boot.
