First of all , nice forum , thanks guys .... .... i think that the most
interresting is the "pro" side , as you know , our job is full of bugs and problems , it would be nice to have a section about the softs an plugs we
(us , pro...in production) are using actually , example : at Digital District we
are big fans of Thinking particles , FumeFx or Ncloth-nucleus ,these tools
are very usefull in production all over the world , more and more , a real place
in this forum could be very helpfull , talking about real production problems...
That's an idea ...
En tout cas welcome et on en attendait pas moins de vous ! cool !

Yep , another idea for the forum , there is a thing that we never talk about,
it's the "in production" work , and we all know why , movie features and commercials , it's the same ... ... keep the secret of a production , but , really ,guys , it's the most interresting part of our job : the production , now,
today , while i'm talking . The question is : Can we just talk about what we are doing in CG , now .
Example : we are working (now ,october2009) on the next coca cola
commercial for the foot worldcup , we believe in the quality of this film ,
i'm sure it will be really nice , Pascal and Richard , it could be a first time in a cg forum : Talk about the prods we are working on
Of course , we have to define limits , no pics if the prod-real-agency-boss
are not agree ...
to resume , What are you doing now guys (or girls) ? That's a question !
and i want to know !....

"in prod" section , think about it ...

Great idea Thomas! I'll think about these and prepare sections names for you to have a look. Like you said a lot of things need to be kept confidential, so we need to be very careful here, but that's good thinking Thomas!

Heya,

I have just added 2 new forums as asked by some users.
a Currently in production section, where people can talk about what they are doing at work, as long as they are allowed to ;)
and a Sketchbooks forum, where people can post their works in their own personal threads without necessarily asking for comments or crits.

Let's see how it goes!

Hi all,

I have just installed a plugin that enables thread thumbnails. It seems like it works only with thread that have attachment to them, but it's a start :D
What I am doing for my threads is, I just go and edit the first post and attach a thumbnail to it. It then displays it while browsing forums.
Let me know if you have any comment/questions, etc...

cheers

maybe it is just my account, but is there a way to set the threads to display with the original post showing up first at the top? For some reason, all threads show the most recent post at the top of page one.

Hi all,

I have just updated the forum so that you guys can now display full rez images within your post, instead of thumbnails you would have to click on.

You just need to upload your file as an attachment (as usual) and then go to the small arrow next to the attachment button and pick your image.

It will include a line like : attachment id
and your image shall display full rez in your post!

Let me know if you have any questions.

Hi all,

As we are just starting to get job offers on the board (thanks Mr X Inc), I was wondering if it would be helpful to create another section for people who are currently looking for jobs. They could post their resume/portfolio there.
I could create sub forums for modeling,texturing,etc.. to make it easier to browse for recruiters.

What do you guys think?

Cheers,

Pascal

collings
19-01-2010, 07:03 PM
to me a job offer section is actually enought, but i wouldn't mind if people wants a "portfolio/introduction" kind of section where we could post our real-name, job title, website link, etc. But i'm not sure if it would be usefull or not ...

PascalR
19-01-2010, 08:50 PM
Thanks for your input collings, yeah I was thinking about a kind of artists database for recruiters to use. I don't know, having a section for people currently available for work seemed to me kind of useful but I could be wrong obviously :)

On the other hand, I realize some people are still working, and looking for another job "secretly", and wouldn't necesseraily want their employer to know about it.

Oh well, let's wait and see.

I have started a thread for this but realized it may not be ideal for new people to find.

That could be very cool. I think too, if there was a way to have the ability to scroll back and forth through all the top threads with some sort of mootools carousel (http://zendold.lojcomm.com.br/icarousel/example3.asp) that would be amazing.

I agree with Collings about available for work forum. It might be cool though if there was a way to just have a looking for work status thing on our profile? not sure.

Thanks for the feedback Bayard, I have put together an html page with all topRow threads here:

You can access it from the front page by clicking on gallery.

Well if there is a demand for a portfolio/introduction , I'll be more than happy to create one.

Might I suggest a forum for CG technical topics (hair, rendering, etc), the general forum seems to be getting alot of stuff like that. And the portfolio section is also a good idea. Obviously you don't want to have 200 forums each with 2 posts, but maybe once it starts to fill out add these in.

PascalR
02-02-2010, 09:06 AM
Hey Ben, thanks for the suggestions, I will add those shortly. I need to find a way to pre format posts for the portfolio section, like name, age, primary area of expertise, website, etc... It would make the portfolios read more easily I think.

The portfolio section is great! I just accidentally hit enter before I was done posting and it seems there's no way to edit your posts?
This would be a good thing to add.
Also, in the online portfolio section, it'd be great to be able to add more than one portfolio link. I seem to have several floating about.
A resume upload might be beneficial as well?
Thanks!

you can actually attach images to your post, or even put a link to a cgfeedback album if you don't have a website.
Anyone can create an album just go to Community>Pictures and Albums

I was wondering if there could be someway to better integrate thumbnails into threads? What I mean is, as threads progress it's hard to tell if people are just posting more replies or if the creator of the thread has posted new stuff? obviously, one can just update the original thumbnail, but if there was a way to have some sort of 'thread thumbnail area' that was always the same, and you could update it from any section of your thread?

just an idea. :)
(I thought of this when I just looked at that tyson thread and didn't realize all sorts of new things were in there? :p )

Hi Community !
I wanted to make a suggestion.
What do you think about opening a Matte Painting section ?
When I say matte painting, I mean real matte painting, as we do in production, not the very illustrative work that we see on the other forum.

Would you like to see this category on CGFeedback ? Or would you like to keep the place specialized in 3D modeling ?

PascalR
21-02-2010, 10:03 AM

I definitely don't want cgfeedback to be a 3d modeling forum only, so if people are interested, I'll be happy to open this section.

Hi Swoop, if you want to post your matte painting work you can either post it in the finished work or in the work in progress work sections. Those sections so far blend 3d, 2d , fx and animation works so feel free to post your matte paintings in there as well :)

but may be it would be better to separate all those areas into specific sections ...

I think a general WIP 2D artwork would be nice because there are people who come by my desk at work and say there's no 2D section to post art. Everyone seems to think that the WIP secton is only for modeling. An animator at work came by and asked where he could post his stuff too.

Let me know if this sounds like something people would be interested in.

So I have installed 2 things this week, one is a picture resizer. It will display images up to 800 pixels wide, and you will need to click on the image to see the full resolution.
That's just to keep the threads a bit more tidy.
Second is an automatic reward system, called Experience. You can see the charts from the Quick Links tab / Experience.
I thought this would be good to encourage people being active in the forum, but I'll tweak or add rewards so that the valuable feedback is more important than just spamming.
I am also looking into having the top row banner to behave differently when clicking on an image. I had a few people asking for a new window to pop up so they don't lose track of where they were while scrolling.

Let me know if you have any questions or concerns :D

Great additions Pascal.

I'm not sure if it's still the same but I know on most vBulletin forums there is a limit to how many images (linked images) can be added in code to each post (I don't mean attachments). It would be nice if there was a limit to say 15-20 images max, instead of 4 or 5. This helps when making tutorial or WIP Threads.

This site gets better and better, more and more talent arrives! Really cool to see such great work here and such interesting interaction

Ahaha yeah I thought gamers would like it :bouncy: I wasn't sure if level 100 was high enough (it's the default settings) but let's see how it goes.
Gagan Jain: The widescreen mode was on by default but made things too tricky to keep tidy, especially with the front page top row and banners. If there is a massive request I'll look into it though.
Glad you guys like the updates

One idea that's been in my mind for ages, how about a "round robin" style collaborative challenge. Starting with something very simple like a cube, people could take turns noodleing with it in sculptis of zbrush or mudbox or whatever. Could be fun?

Yeah, kind of a collaborative challenge rather than a competitive challenge, but I think it would fit under the mini-challenge umbrella if you do make a section like that Pascal.
The round-robbin we did on Tweak worked out pretty well, but I think it could be even better these days; with programs like sculptris it's so easy to let your imagination go wild.
Fun stuff, would be great to get taron on-board.

just a quick heads up, the top row banner seems to be broken, i see the coundownr widget at the bottom which works fine but some of the thumbnails are cutoff in the header(the first one and the last one) and the arrow is no longer there to view other toprow threads, unless this was on purpose?

Just in case you were wondering where the older top row thread went!? I have temporarily shorten the list as my server was not liking the huge background download. So I'll try to find a nice way (any ideas are welcome) to put the older threads thumbnails on a webpage and update it every week.

I only activated it for the Contact Challenge forum and Sub-Forums for now, to see how it goes.
Let me know if you think it may be worth adding to other forums.

I know that cataloging reference material is an infinite task, with no real end in sight, but I'm wondering about the possibility of having a section dedicated to reference material. But not as a list of threads. Threads are difficult to organize and make accessing information laborious.

Does vBulletin offer any kind of static pages option for housing links, or would such a catalog be better managed by alternate means altogether, like a separate site or wiki? I'm not suggesting we go that far, I'm mainly just curious what people think of the lengthening References thread...whether it's okay as it is or whether there is anything we can do to refine it.

Since it's a forum feedback spot I will say it out loud: can we actually have feedback on this forum back, please - it's slowly becoming another 'awesome man' fest, which is disappointing... Hey Mag, as long as the WIP section (which was the first created one) keeps being a feedback oriented one , I am not too worried. Infact I keep seing great feedback being posted there everyday. Some people ask for feedback in the finished section but to be honnest 99% won't go back to their piece once finished so that's why the WIP area is so important here.
Same applys to the sketchbook section, I personnaly won't take the time to give crits on stuff when I know people will most likely move on to another piece anyway.
Cheers for the feedback Mag:beerchug:

Intervain

fair enough - I prefer to receive feedback even if I won't go back to sth and I've seen people receive one on WIP and not doing anything about either it so I'm not convinced lol - but either way had to put it out there so we don't have yet another forum which is simply an ego booster for some and useless for others:beerchug:

I kind of agree with you Mag. The forum starting to be well known, it attracts a lot more of people. The main issue is that there are more people willing to receive eFame than people willing to help and participate in a constructive way. I see a lot of guys harvesting multiples boards to gather recognition, while I have no much problem with that, it would be "supa" nice of them to take part a bit to the community. I mean they get exposed and there is nothing in return :(

However the eFame Seeker / Constructive Feedback Bringer ratio is still good, we have a fairly solide CORE of nice people that are willing to keep the things professional and friendly. Proof is your post :]

Cheers,

hey all!

i have had this little idea of doing artist interviews.. with so many talented folks here, there's gotta be some fun anecdotes, great tips and insightful background stories.. it would be cool, to make "case studies" on a given project (if possible).
i would like to see something a little more than the usual 10 questions.

it could also help break the ice for new comers and people who might find themself rank lower at the "experience ladder"... so to speak. also seen in the light of the previous discussion.
giving crits can sometimes be almost daunting, to artists you really look up to, even if they are just as valid.

another take on the interview could be to announce a given "spotlight artist". then the rest of us ask all the questions we would like. -and then the 5-10 best/insightful questions would be send artist for answering the best he/she can.
the "spotlight artist" could either be here from the forum or somewhere else.

wauw.. what a lot of words. hope you can dissect it. hehe

looking forward to hear your thoughts.

3rded. I have to agree. It can sometimes be hard to give critique by not sounding too much like an ***.

Pascal is a very good leader in this field at does it well. He sees things I always miss but subliminally know are at fault.

Personally I have received invaluable feedback in the past and recently, and it has really helped me change course and fix things I would have otherwise not noticed. It also helps knowing the feedback comes with a professional meaning to it.

The other thing is this site doesn't suffer from a draconian style rule, it's more of a democratic forum full of really inspiring work, cool people and less of a dictatorship. Know whada mean :p

But I agree more constructive feedback is necessary, it's finding a way to do it, with sounding like a know it all goody goody :D

the new buttons looks fine. they might be a tad big for my taste. maybe half the size or take them 30% down in size? -could be removing some of the space above the buttons would be enough.

one click for moi, could be made a bit smaller and less surrounding room, lot of real estate at the top now before you get to see the view. :DI like the idea of the buttons. I think they're a little large at the moment.

The only thing that really stands out to me is, as Tony mentioned, all the visual "stuff" between the top of the page and the actual forum.

You might eliminate a row or two by placing all the challenge and appeal items on a single row, similar to the plugged threads at the top.

It doesn't change the awesome content and helpful attitudes inside the forum though, and that's the best part! As long as that remains unaffected!:D

Sorry if this has already been mentioned but i think it would be nice to have a like button or something like that for threads or for individual posts. I find myself looking through some of the amazing work but not posting any response due to a lack of having anything intelligent to say and at the same time i thnik it would be nice to let the artist know that i looked and liked what they did.. i guess it would allow for people to be allot more lazy but it could also mean that threads arn't filled up with pages of praise posts and kept more on topic.. Just an idea and completely ripped off facebook

Hey Pascal,

Just a suggestion.
not sure if this is doable, but it would be nice to have one sticky "what are you working on" thread, in the wip section, where everybody posts in this one thread. maybe im just too lazy to look at each new thread that is created or go thru all the sketchbooks but i think with the addition of this, more ppl would post more often.

Sometimes it feels like this forum isnt "alive" as it could be.I know the forum is still growing but It could be for ppl who aren't dedicated enough to start their own sketchbook or wip thread, just to show something, along with everybody else. Could also attract new members.

something like polycounts wip thread

Thoughts?

Thanks for your input Mladen, I know what you mean and that's a pretty good idea to make people post more, but I don't think it would make feedback and following on feedback easy at all. It may encourage people posting their work but I'm concerned good crits would get lost in a potentially long thread.
Maybe more in the sketchbook section than in the wip, since feedback is less required there.
I'd still be interested in listening to what other people think of that idea.
cheers!

1+ to that idea, could give a bit more life to the forum I think :)

How about a speed painting/speed sculpting thread, something more ephemeral.

well if you look at the stats, more people visit the WIP forum, so if its made in the sketchbook section, it will probably get lost and/or will never grow.

I can see your concern about actual constructive feedback, in which case, one potential solution could be to make one rule in the thread, no praises allowed, only feedbacks

anyways, just a suggestion to improve the overall forum productivity.

btw, whatever happened to challenges? it would be sweet if those started up again

Sounds good, just create a thread in the WIP section with the feedback rule mentioned and I'll make it sticky.
As for the challenges I didn't have time to prepare small ones recently as I am working on a big one that will hopefully start in December.

cheers
