The sculpting connoisseurs among you may already be aware of this brilliant hyper realist sculptor. I only came across her a few days ago, to me I think she is up there with the Jamie Salmons and Ron Muecks of our time.

I higly recommend her book:

I'm curious how much of these are sculpted and how much is just lifecast, or enlargments of lifecasts. Lifecasting is sort of a cheat, no? It brings to mind the realist sculptor duane hanson http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duane_Hanson
which, even though interesting, are just painted lifecasts, which to me, isn't really sculpture :P

:beerchug:

Its the same as 3d scans vs freehand sculpting in mudbox or zbrush. obviously 3d scans are great for a realistic effect, and in production are essential. But, is it sculpture?

what you guys think?
On the flipside though, the same could be said for photos. I guess in the end its the final result and what you're trying to say with it?
:P

Perhaps, but you could use the same arguement about those silly artists that use a Wacom instead of the traditional good ol fashioned Mouse

or the artist that are able to create great works of art with just MS paint. Photoshop is cheating

The end result is what's important I think.

I'd have to agree with Bayard on this one, it would be great to see her sculpting more stylized things, or fantasy subjects with that same realism.
One of my favorites sculptors is Patricia Piccinini, and she does just what I've mentioned.

I have to disagree on this, also if it was an easy thing to do allot more people would be doing it. I think there is a certain amount of understanding and technical ability involved. Lifecasting to sculpture and even re-sizing a sculpture to large proportions which is what Carole does with some of her pieces would be quite hard to do no?

Slapping on some wings or a horn here or there would be pretty easy to do, and then calling that creative.

Wow yes, she is great.

Oh I am sure what she is doing requires a high level of expertise, I would just love to see her doing some more weird stuff (personal taste thing), using her eye for realism and techniques.
A bit like this (no wings involved here ;) )

haha...Patricia Pucinni's stuff is excellent, but much to my dismay, she actually doesn't sculpt any of it. She comes up with an idea, then hires an fx studio in australia to sculpt her ideas... or so I've heard?
:(
awesome work to whomever worked on it though?

Seems a trend with many fine artists today...including this fellow:
http://www.robertlazzarini.com/
He hires 3d guys to model his ideas...then has them rapid prototyped.
though, in person I must say the result is amazingly effective.
Therein comes subject matter.

Lifecasting is infact very easy...and I've done quite a bit of it. That being said, if she was using it and saying something brilliant, then I'd be all for it. Her subject matter though seems to not be saying much more than 'look at me!...I'm super realistic!"

;)

I never new lifecasting was so easy! I wanna go :bouncy:

I would love to see more examples of any life casting artists, the subject matter fascinates me. Especaily Waxworks, it's that notion of capturing a moment of someone frozen in time. Especialy the ones that shout 'look at me!...I'm super realistic!"

That image of the critters suckling makes me sooooo uneasy! great concept!:beerchug:

http://www.samjinks.com/ are these sculpted by hand?

This Sam jinks is fantastic!
it seems his working methods are quite similar to ron mueck:
http://www.australianedge.net/2009/11/interview-with-sam-jinks/
as you can see in this interview, his sculpts are done traditionally with nothing more than simple waterbased clay.
