Since I can't keep focus on just one project with out making a few sketches now and then, I thought I might as well start a sketchbook here as well.

I made this guy today:
http://frederikstorm.dk/images/doodles/awas.jpg

Hopefully more doodles will follow soon ;)

PascalR

ahah great style  I know it is stylized but I would brake up the chin shape just a tiny bit.
Nice one though:D

Storm
01-04-2010, 11:10 PM
Thanks man glad you like it ;)
Yeah I was actually trying to brake it up but I kinda couldn't think of what to do, but I'll try again for sure, it definitely need it :D

Okay so something crazy good happened last night (while I was sleeping).

Bobby Chiu (guess you all know who he is?) had a Chiustream (donno if you know what that is? he make small contest were we all do an image from a theme and the winner win an original sketch or painting) he made this concept as a warm-up for an upcoming interview with Alessandro Carloni, who was head of story on "How to train your dragon".

The price last night was an original dragon sketch by Bobby Chiu.
We had 6-7 hours (don't remember the exact number) to create a "goth dragon", so with that much time I decided to take my concept to zbrush.
So for 4-5 hours I busted my *** off, (had to stop then because I was so goddamn tired).
I uploaded my image and went to bed.
Here is my image:
1150

So I woke up this morning, and it turns out Alessandro choses mine as the winner :D So that was pretty freaking sweet! Just wish I had seen it live.

You can see the other entries and the interview here, if it would have any interest:
http://www.sketchoholic.com/Talent/member/my_contest_items.php?ContestID=310

Anyway hope you guys like my dragon as well ;)

PascalR
02-04-2010, 12:36 AM
Wow nice one, especially considering the time you've spent on it, congrats for winning the contest

Storm

Thanks Pascal, really glad to hear you like it ;)

Ken
02-04-2010, 11:17 PM
nice work! I love your work style (character/creature design) :)
Congrats anyway

Storm
05-04-2010, 09:55 AM
Thank you Ken! And I'm really glad you like them :D

This is not really a sketch but since it need to be done by Thursday, but you get it here anyway.

1169

I just hope I'll have the time to finish him, got a lot of homework as well.
Hope you guys like him, CC is very welcome!

PascalR
05-04-2010, 10:21 AM
Great style, those hands remind me of your aquatic creature :)

Very cool:thumbsup:

Storm
08-04-2010, 07:22 AM
Thank you Pascal, alway good to hear :D
And yeah they properly do, my fishguy was kinda intended to be this wierd mixture of a frog and a fish, and I guess the hands came out quite froggish ;)

So yesterday I got really nervous that I might not finish in time, because a. I got sick and spend the entire day puking:banghead:
b. it turned out the deadline was today.
But despite all that, here is my final image:
1193

Theres still a few hours left to upload for the contest, so If you guys spot something that you think needs to be changed let me know ;)

Edit:
The image turned out a little blurry when I uploaded it, so here is a sharp render:

Storm

I should be working on my fishdude, and I proberly should have done some homework aswell, but I accidently made this doodle, it started out as random lines on a sphere to show a friend of mine how zbrush worked :D
Its kinda inspired by the balrog from LOTR:
1318

Id be happy to hear what you guys think ;)

PascalR
17-04-2010, 05:04 PM
hehe cute version of the balrog :)

The face looks a touch flat from the 3 quarter angle, but nice zb sketch:beerchug:

Storm
18-04-2010, 08:49 AM
Thanks :D
Glad you like it, and I agree he does look a bit flat, leftover from the original sphere I guess ;)

Storm
30-04-2010, 06:21 AM
Working on a small project that is due to may the 6th. I kinda need to get away from my fishdude for a little while, I felt a bit stuck with him, so hopefully this is gonna help ;)

He is going to be my own version of Michelango's David:
1434
1433

I haven't touched the legs much, but I'm working on it.

Let me hear what you guys think ;)
Critique is very very welcome.

PascalR
30-04-2010, 01:11 PM
haha nice one, I love the head :)
Depends on how stylized you want to go, but yeah legs need more detailing especially from the back, and maybe you could get the hands more stylized to be in line with the head.

Cool stuff:beerchug:

Storm
30-04-2010, 10:08 PM
Thanks Pascal :beerchug:

I think the level of stylize I am at now is very close to what I want, I definitely don't want the sharp edges to become too dominant. Although I agree with you on the hands and legs, so I'll take a look at what to do about them ;)

Storm
01-05-2010, 07:09 AM
Got an update ready, I've tried to tighten up the hands and legs, hope it helped ;)

1444

Storm
03-05-2010, 05:29 AM
Okay, been trying to add the final touches.
1462
1463

Let me hear what you guys think ;)

PascalR
03-05-2010, 12:54 PM
Nice stuff! the ankles silhouette looks a bit thick and straight from the back view but great style clap

Storm
04-05-2010, 11:46 PM
Thanks mate, I'll take a look at those angels ;)

Storm
06-05-2010, 12:24 PM
Okay, so I got him posed, and I would love to hear what you guys think, cause I still got tomorrow to make the final touches.

Hey guys, I made this little doodle today, been wanting to do a troll for quite some time now, so I hope you guys like him ;)

1544

PascalR
09-05-2010, 12:07 PM
hehe that's a funny one :beerchug: Don't think those eyes could be smaller than that :D
Keep them comin! (right after you finish your aqua dude of course)

Storm
10-05-2010, 02:18 AM
Hehe thanks, no I think this is the absolute smallest I could make them :D
And yeah gotta finish my aquadude, I am really bad at sticking at one thing when its just a sparetime project.

Btw how to I change the thumbnail of the thread?

Storm
26-08-2010, 03:39 AM
Don't want this thread to die out, so here is a little doodle I made last night, spend around 2 hours on him:
2720

He was kinda stuck in my head so I just had to get him out of my system, and I've been thinking about maybe doing a series of small/fast doodles like this one, a bunch of monster in motion, but we'll see ;)
Hope you guys like him.

oglu
26-08-2010, 03:51 AM
lol i love this one...
could give a short breakdown on your workflow...?

Storm
26-08-2010, 04:41 AM
Haha, glad you like it Christoph :D

Sure thing, well it started with a little sketch a made a few days ago.
But for the 3D part, I start from zspheres:
2721

I then spend some time on the low subd, with the move and smooth brush, move it up to around level 4 and move on to the claybuildup brush (which I use along with the smooth brush) and flatten, and from there I take it one subd at the time, jump back and forth a few times to correct some of the major shapes etc.
Also this was so fast to do because I could keep symmetry on for most parts.
And I think thats about it. Maybe I should record it when I do the next one ;)

PascalR
27-08-2010, 08:59 AM
Maybe I should record it when I do the next one ;)
YEs please! :D Great style as always, thanks for sharing these Stormclap

Storm
27-08-2010, 02:32 PM
Thanks mate ;)
I'm just glad you guys like them :D

I got a new monster in motion ready:
2737

And I did record the entire process, took 2 hours and 10 minutes, rendering included, and I was just wondering, what speed what you guys like the recordings uploaded at? And this question leads to another, is there some place that take videos longer than 10 minutes, I'd hate to sit and break the video down in parts?

Anyhow, I hope you guys like him!

Storm
28-08-2010, 07:29 AM

great style... i love the dynamic in the pose...

i like to do a camaeleon...

Storm
31-08-2010, 08:01 AM
Thanks Christoph! :D
Camaeleons are definitely some of my favorite animals, would love to do a proper one some time.

Anyway, I made this one last night, just got into the new apartment, no TV, no internet, so I really didn't have anything better to do :D
2747

oglu
31-08-2010, 08:31 AM
an other great one... but i dont like the horns...
maybe smaller ones or twisted like a sheep..?

Storm
31-08-2010, 11:24 AM
Thanks Christoph, it was pointed out to me on ZBC as well, so I changed the horns ;)
Hope its better this way.

Got a few new models, and a couple of drawings.
Made this one yesterday:
2995

2991
Click to see full res image

And just some quick head doodels, the sharkthingy turned out to be very inspired by one of my favorite characters of all time, Munch from Oddworld:

2992

And a couple of drawings I made during the week:
2993
2994

I think I'm gonna upload a couple of sketches from my actual sketchbook as well, I just need to get them scanned ;)
Hope you guys like it.

collings
20-09-2010, 06:17 AM
dude you are really inventive, love your cartoon character design. You should shoot for a job at dreamworks or pixar. i'm sure they would consider your application with interest :D

Storm
20-09-2010, 08:01 AM
Haha, Thanks Nicolas! Maybe I should give it a go, hehe ;)
Joking aside, that's certainly what I'm aiming for :D

PascalR
20-09-2010, 08:47 AM
ahah that's really great Storm, love the full 3d character you just did. So you're always starting from zsphere, right? Basically starting from scratch everytime?
Great work, keep em comin!

Storm
20-09-2010, 09:46 AM
Thanks Pascal, glad you like him :D
Yeah Zspheres is how everything started. Usually, or actually always, my shapes from character to character are so different from each other that I wouldn't be able to reuse anything.
Although I should mention that I did use blender for the piece around his neck/shoulders (the thing with the wire to the helmet connected), it is a shape that doesn't work well with the clipping brushes.

MJG
20-09-2010, 02:31 PM
aha, so this is where you are posting your stuff. took me a while to find it.
you plan on making that devil in 3d? cuz its look tight man!
anyway, keep up the good work, and post more ! haha

Storm
22-09-2010, 09:00 PM
Haha, yeah I'm hiding it here :D
Thanks for the comment mate, super glad you like it.
I wasn't planning on doing the devil in 3D, but I'm not gonna rule it out either ;)

handlebar
23-09-2010, 08:16 AM
Love the rat critter Storm, i too would love to see the devil sketch in 3d, he has really nice proportions and style.

Storm
24-09-2010, 09:48 AM
Thanks mate, I might have to look into that ;)

Anyway, I thought it would be fun to upload a few pages from my actual sketchbook, I actually got a few more I'd like to upload but I haven't got a scanner around:
3051
3052
3057
3056

(sorry about the bad scans)
Hope you guys like them, more to follow

Storm
04-10-2010, 11:22 AM
Okay a few new 3D sketches, haven't had nearly as much time for zbrush as I would have liked to have, but I guess learning Maya is gonna prove very useful :D

Anyway, first a fish, which I might move to WIP as I hope to take it futher, new topo, more details, textures etc.
3159

And a little Owl sketch I just made:
3160

Hope you guys like them ;)

Manuel Poehlau
04-10-2010, 08:06 PM
Great new characters, love the owl :D

rasmusW
05-10-2010, 10:57 PM
oy frederik!

great new sketches. it be cool to see more work on "fishy". maybe a small scene with a bit env. and this guy sticking his eyes just above the waterline, looking for flies or whatever it eats.

-r

Storm
06-10-2010, 05:36 AM
Hey Rasmus ;)
Thanks mate, I'm actually working on an enviroment for this guy, I'll see if I can get the sketch up some day, and maybe the enviroment I got so far.

Its a project for my to learn maya with, so its very far from perfect, since I've never really done any work in maya before.

Which leads me to another question, I find retopologysing in maya rather painfull, do you guys use some awesome plugin that I don't know of, or do you just do it in topogun?

rasmusW
06-10-2010, 07:48 AM
almost all modeling in maya is painful.. heheh
i use a nifty little plugin called nex. it's great both for normal modeling and re topo. the re topo parts works more or less like topogun... -haven't really tried topogun, so i'm not 100% sure.
looking forward to see what you come up with.

-r

Storm
09-10-2010, 07:38 AM
Thanks Rasmus, that looks like a really sweet plugin ;)

Okay, I'm still kinda working on the fish, but I have no idea when I'll have an update up, he has gotten a new topo but still has a long way to go with textures, shaders, details etc.
But I think I'm gonna do a new character as well this weekend, I made this sketch yesterday, painted him up today, and I think he would make a really cool digital maquette:
3195
3196

Hope you guys like him ;)

PascalR
09-10-2010, 08:34 AM
haha great sketch Storm, now go 3dclap

Storm
10-10-2010, 12:56 AM
Thanks Pascal, really glad you like it, hope to make it 3D today ;)

Storm
10-10-2010, 10:50 AM
So here he is:
3200

He was super super fun to make, don't know why but I really enjoyed making this falla.
So let me hear what you guys think ;)

PascalR
10-10-2010, 03:42 PM
Looks cool and funny :) I think the tail's fins could use some more break up on the silhouette like in your drawing, and have the tip pointy instead of round.

Cool model very funny

Storm
11-10-2010, 06:25 AM
Thanks!
You were so right about the tail fin, I actually started modeling it with polygons, but I accidently hit some mysterious button and blender shut down, so I got lazy and did something fast in zbrush :D
But today I pulled myself together and redid the tail.
3204
3205
3206

Hope you guys like them ;)

PascalR
11-10-2010, 04:49 PM
Very cool, tail looks better, a bit of pinching at the top of the new creases but that's minor ;)

Love the second painted one, nice!

oglu
12-10-2010, 09:30 AM
i like the last one...

i have to do more comic style models...
i stuck with the stuff i doo... im feeling no improvement...
maybe some comic design could help...

how do you start such designs..?
have you an idea in mind or are you doing always 2d sketches first..?

Storm
13-10-2010, 12:15 PM
@PascalR
Thanks mate, glad you like it ;)
Yeah the tail could properly still use a bit of work.

@oglu
Thanks man, glad you like it ;)
I donno I think your sculpts are looking better and better ;)
But I'd definately love to see some cartoony stuff from you as well.
I start on paper most of the time, but for example my rocket turtle was designed 100% in zbrush.
I think the more cartooney shapes will often be more likely to pop up on paper.
When I'm designing I'll ofte just start with a random shape, and just build on that, often the design will go way beyond that shape, but it just helps me get my ideas going. I usually don't have a very clear idea of what I want before I start.
I think its a pretty crappy help, my best advise is to "steal" stuff that you love in art and try to merge it into your own stuff, eventually I think it will turn into a unique style if you steal from enough different places haha :D

its a pleasure to see you working...
your feeling about shapes is what im most lacking in...

Storm

Thanks buddy! ;)
I find, that a good way to practice shapes, is to just draw a bunch of random lines and work from that.

I got super inspired by Adam's sketches, and decided to check out sculptris myself, got to say for a creature like this, the program is perfect! Love it!
I can't see how I could use it for my cartooney sculpts but for something like this, just plain amazing :D

4096

I feel a bit like I owe Kolby Jukes a little for the design, this one kept popping up in my head: http://www.kolbyjukes.com/images/INTERNAL_PORTFOLIO/personal/Clamhead.jpg

These latest sculpts look really great, Frederick, I especially like that bug-eyed creature. You seem to prefer more 'cartoony' (for lack of a better word) sculpts, but it's interesting to see how well your style translates to something a bit more detailed. Reminds me quite a bit of Kolby Jukes, who's work I'm a huge fan of. I'm curious to see how far you can push the detail and realism in your work while still retaining your style. Might result in something pretty awesome looking. Just a thought. :)

As far as dino suggestions go - can't go wrong with the velociraptor.

keep it up man, looks rad as usual

aren't you interested in texturing them ? i mean it looks great as sketches but it would be awesome to see one from time to time completed with textures-shaders and with a nice render to warp it all up ^^. just sayin' maybe you just want to do digital maquette sculpts which is cool too :) in that case you should try to make a few with real clay just like they do at pixar-dreamworks or bluesky. i have posted a few links on my inspirational blog, love it !

Storm
04-01-2011, 01:50 AM
Thanks Nicolas, so glad you like them :beerchug:
You have no Idea how many times people have asked me that. I'd love to do it, textures and a great render is really what can make a model stand out, my problem just is, that I got way to many ideas I wan't to build in digital clay. Even when I just keep these quite simple, I only have the time to do few of them.
So basically it boils down to, a choice I've made, that I'd much rather get a bunch of Ideas out, compared to a few with textures and renders.
I hope to do some fully rendered and textured in the future though, I still got 3 years left before I get my bachelor in cg-art, and I expect to learn a lot about texturing and rendering in those 3 years.

No doubt I prefer the freedom of maquettes, but I'd love to do some "final" models as well ;)

Btw, awesome inspiration blog! Its bookmarked ;)

And I even got a new sculpt going, went back to zbrush for this one ;)

A doodle for today, a little different than what I normally sculpt, but after I saw this magnificent creature on TV the other night I was just sold. I was simply blown a way that today we got a living creature that to my practically is a dinosaur, and an insane one of the kind, instant favorite animal :D
So here is my sculpt of a Cassowary:

Its been way to long since I've had anything to show, but finally I got some new stuff to share with you guys, first, a head I made last night + this morning:
5725

And then a character I'll be doing for a school project, the idea is to make him as realistic as possible, I can't draw that realistic so thats why it looks a bit cartooney :)
But anyway, he is what I believe is called a sahdu, from my understanding people who have given up all worldly possessions to get closer to god.
Don't know how much more time on gonna spend on the drawing if any, but I'll be making a clay maquette Wednesday and Thursday (can't wait :D )
5726
I'm properly gonna start a wip thread soon with this project as it will be going for 5 more weeks.

But hope you guys like it, CC is very welcome of cause, and I'll properly have some drawings to show monday as well, just haven't had them scanned yet.

Hey Storm,

cool creature, topology looks good to me for this kind of style. It would need more resolution if you went for realistic deformations with folds,etc...
Nice:beerchug:

Storm
16-03-2011, 09:49 PM
Thanks mate ;)
Where would you add the extra geomety?
Or would you simply just devide the mesh once?
Just for further ref :)

PascalR
16-03-2011, 10:21 PM
yep, subdivide it once or twice to get wrinkles, but before doing that you would increase the shoulder area and reduce the lines you have under the dorsal scales to get a more even resolution.
If this creature was more muscular your flow would need to follow more the muscles.
Cheers

you going to tackle a full human at all or just leave it as a bust? would love to see you do some more humanish types, stylized or not.

it would be pimp to see you render at least one of em.

great work nontheless!

@PascalR
Awesome, thanks a ton for the tips, I'll add some more loops at the joints right away ;)

@MJG
Thank you Mladen! So glad to hear so :)
The human figure will be fullbody, I don't think I'm gonna do textures for that one though. But my plan was to take this croc guy further, spend some more time sculpting and maybe textures as well.

@rasmusW
Thanks buddy! And so do I, hope I can keep the steam going on this one ;)

Hehe, thanks Brett, I'm really glad you like them ;)

@3mm
Yeah I've been looking having an eye on 3D coat for some time now, especially after Scott Eaton recommended it when we gave anatomy lessons at my school. And its pretty affordable as well, $100 for a student version!
I'm gonna test it on my Indian Fakir guy I posted the concept of earlier ;)

Oh and sorry totally forgot, thanks glad you like it :D

Thanks bud, glad you like it ;)

I've been working on this guy for two weeks now, its been quite a challenge, as I've been aiming to go as realistic as possible, still got a long way to go, although the project will be done this week (can't wait to pose him, got a feeling that is gonna help a lot).

Any CC would be much appreciated as this certainly could use is, I regret that I haven't posted any progress before. But here goes, been sculpting on him for 2 days now in mudbox:

Nice work Frederik!
The robots look great,
I agree, these would look great posed,
Not sure of the direction you want to take these,
but the odd dent/scratch in the metal, might give them a bit of character
Good Work!

Hey Storm , great character reminds me of Monsters inc boss :) I updated your post, it's a bit of a pain but if you want your images to show up full rez you now have to use the bbCode: [attachfull] instead of [attach]
The plugin is a bit buggy (as you won't see this command if you edit your post now) but it works.
So basically attach them the old way and then add "full" at the end of each [attach]

cheers

Pascal
