Hi all! I'm new here, so I started a version of Conan, I had wanted to do something medieval from some times, so why not a Conan, of course I will use my Arnold that I did before(for those who know me) and I had tweaked his face to mach more him in Conan.
But for now I post some accessories that I'm working on, the helmet and the laceneck are mapped the rest is not uwrapped, only temporare textures.
The Conan Atantlean sword is all done in poly modeling in 3dsmax, no zbrush, I want to save memory and render time..and doing some hard modeling too.
So for now it's that. Hope you like it.

No zbrush (0_o) You gotta show a wire for this. It looks incredible. Wouldn't expect anything less from you of course :). Loved your Arnie.

yeah looks great, would be nice to show some wireframes indeed. Also the top teeth of the fish ornaments are disconnected from the upper lip :)
Keep it up!

Nice update, the boots look quite clean, dirt would be great to see, and ideally crap in the fur as well.
Thanks for the wireframe, looking forward to see the props put onto the body:D
Cool stuff:thumbsup:

Nice! I would break up the skin specular (and lower it on the face) so it doesn't look that oily. The specular looks much better in the right hand screen renders actually.
I hope you will go for a dirty skin and props texture version, he is a barbarian!
But the resemblance is spot on, great work clap

Hey thank's :)
But for dirtying his skin, if you look at Conan the destroyer( cause 'I'm doing that version of him) his skin look clean and perfect, not dirty at all, ok boots etc can be dirty, but for the skin I'm not sure. What kind of dirt you mean? He's a barbarian but he washed himself lol. I had thought about doing some blood on his shoulder and on the sword ..
And adding dirt in the fur.. the only thing I can add is maybe some dry mud there and here... not sure if it worth the effort because in the final render that fur will not be in close up view.
and for the reflection, yeah, I like more the one at the right too, but it's not the same type of lighting, at the left it's photometric light and at the right it's portal light with mib_cie.
I am doing an attemp at ibl lighthing too, the accessory's are rendered in ibl.

well for the skin you could add blood like you said, sweat or even mud if he's just coming out of a fight. I am pretty sure he was very clean in that movie, and it's a personal taste thing, but I always think dirt makes things look less cg.
On avatar for example, I really like the shots where they get the war paints and even when Jake is covered with mud as it makes things more believable to my eye (even though you don't have the blue skin handicap here).
Anyways, looking forward to your updates on this one:thumbsup:

Amazing variety of work there. Both modelling, shading and texturing.
I agree on the oily look, if you dont want to dirty him, but make some changes to your spec/reflection map. Break it up a little.
example: The 'T' area of the face is always more oily than the cheeks.
In terms of the big man himself. Amazing work, just like how i remembered him from the film. Few things are a little off, zygomatic (cheek) bone seems a little too big and flat (or the flesh surrounding it) or it could even the be the transition from that area into the rest of the face. I dont have any reference here but that is one thing i did notice.
The second is he eyes. They look spot on. So its hard to tell what is wrong. Anatomically they work. I would have done a little refinement on the brow area and the interior of the orbital socket, but it holds together. Maybe they are a little too small? Its hard to critique without reference.
Thing is, it could pass as a human 100%, but its only off by a fraction when your comparing it to Arnie, and is its smallest differences that you notice.
But amazing work and would love to see updates and an epic scene in a fighting pose. :)

hi!
PascalR:
I will see for the dirt on him, I will first add some body fur and the with the hairs and all the stuff done, I will check the general look and see if it's needed, it add extra work lol. but I will do a test, and see if the dirt look credible and add a plus value in that context, thank's for your input. I will add some more details on the boot, I mapped it quickly.
For the spec, I already have a reflection and sepc map, and I have that T sahpe sepc in the face.. hands have less spec, more spec in the middle of the chest.. but depending of the lights, it shows more or less, I will tweak that on the final image.
phrenzy84 :
For the face, maybe look at the ref also to compare. But it's sure it's not 100% looking like Arnold, first I don't have superb ref, just the one on the net... so it's harder and secondly, Cg is CG, even the head of terminator that ILM did for terminator salvation was not spot on, look like, but not spot on. Even if they scan the head they had from arnold in T1 and redo it in 3d.. it still have rooms for improvement. But, it's Cg, I feel the main objective is accomplished, he look like him, we recognise well him even wihtout hair and eyebrow, so I think for now I will not touch a lot the face, I have little thing to tweak for now but nothing major. If you can point me precisely with picture ref of him and comparaison of mine what you think can be tweaked, I will look at closely, maybe I have fooled some part,we never know, I'm kind of tired of seeing his face now lol so..
Hope you will like the final image, by the way, you guys do you have a nice idea about a cool pose for him?
And I will not put him into a fight... too much work doing other character for now, I just want to close him and focus anyway on him.

This is some excellent modelling! very impressive! The main problem I see is the ears. They seem too flat, the helix needs to 'project' more. I did a quick paint over to describe:

this is looking really good...
the only critic I can give is that the overall sss amount is still a bit too much...make his skin feel a little waxy/fudge look
anyway...looking forward to the final image:thumbsup:

This is looking fantastic. I agree with the dirt. Even though in the movie he was clean. Why not take some artistic licence and throw him into a scene after battle? Where he is all blood and dirt. It would tell more of a story than if he were just clean.
The renders are looking amazing though. Any chance of some screen grabs?

Looking good man.
Some crits,
Your skin sss effects feel little strong or you just need to paint some weight maps.
Textures feel little flat through out the skin, also feels like you have no AO on the skin.
I would add some Dirt+Blood and also scars. He is fighting thousands of men a year, he is going to be ****ed up looking hehe.

hi there! Thank's all for your critics , yes I will dirt him a bit ;).
But Ithink I will render him with Vray, the fastsss2 is awesome :) here are some tests render, nothing is final! it's only testing phase, and there is just 2 maps use, one diffuse and one bump, for the spec I putted a noise for now, and no sss weight maps. The front scattering of vray work much better then the one in Mr I found.
The shader do not work the one like in mr, so it take some time to get it work right.
SO I did a HDRI set up and only one light! and the result is great, much better then what I got with Mr and HDRI. I can change de hdri maps it always look great, so that is cool.
but here are my result for now

hmm those vray renders look sexy. You able to post material shot of your sss material ?
Tempted to try vray skin out, seems to be improving more over mental rays one. You really have to work it and tune your light to get the results you need.

Great stuff, I love the first shot (is this Depardieu?) as it has more break up in the color map.
Can't wait for the fully mapped shader on Conan:bouncy:
Very promising tests indeed :beerchug:

yeah, it's a shot of my gerard depardieu bust, I never finish him.. but I will soon tought, hair are already done in hairfarm , I need to do a little pass of the modeling in zbrush and I will finish it has a still shot.
Thank's all for the comms. More to come.
i like your renders :D
did you render several passes or is it just the sss2 shader?
I've tested the sss2 shader some days ago and I noticed the skin gets darker when I zoom out and brighter when I zoom in. Do you have the same problem or do you know why this happens?

C-R:
No it's direct output, no photoshop!
Hmm I don't think I got this bug, I'm having a bug with the fastsss2, is that when it's too translucent it tend to became greenish color where the front colors lightheng the surface... I read the doc.. they says put an opposite color..etc.. but it do not work, it only work with color, but when you have texture maps, you don't want your skin look blue or anyother

Nice! I would lower the reflection on the lips or having it slightly broader, it almost feels like if he put lipstick on ;)
Also there is a crease on the cheek bone, right under the eye bags that I would smooth out.
Looking great though, keep it up :beerchug:

I'd agree with pascal. The lips are brighter than the eye spec/reflections.
Amazing work though. Always a pleasure seeing updates on this. Its amazing how much you learn from doing a real human. Keep going:beerchug:

Delete this post Pascal, it's a double post!
I'm just having more fun with Vray, an other test render of this guy haha, make me want to do him like a shot in Terminator 1 ..maybe one day..
I modifed the eye socket and make less wide his head, wich reproportionated his head a bit more I found. I can't do close up of his head, it's a old mesh and not that good for sbrush because the eyes are not close so I get some artefact around they eyes, really tricky to get out of this in photoshop.. anyway, it's good for a body shot like I want to do in Conan version of a Terminator also.
Hope you like it.

Very nice! The chest looks a bit shiny to me, but I love the face, you get some beautiful spec break ups on the forehead.
The skin color variants are only different env lights, or shader tweaks? The RHS head looks better imho.
Very cool!

Hi Pascal!
There is no hdri in this one, only to 2 vraylights. I only play with the level in photoshop haha :)
and what do you mean here? The RHS head looks better imho.
Bon, je retourne sur ma tete, j'ai fait la chemise là, vais poster bientot.

ah cool, I just meant that I like the head color better on your right hand screen render ( not too pale and not too saturated.)
Super, j'attends la suite avec impatience
