Impressive, I suppose you will need a very dense base mesh to get this stuff to work properly but that is a very cool tool to have

this kind of stuff is freaking awesome but in the same time it makes me thing that it could reduce the need of good digital sculptor. like for instance, if at some point everybody has a big library of vector displacement stencils with shapes of mouth - nose - ears - eyes in , every 3d dude will be able to have a awesome 3d face, we should just need to tweak it from that point to get the appropriate result.

Don't get me wrong that pretty awesome but a bit scary at the the same time. ahah :p

dont worry... you need enough skill to place those stencils in the right place...
and if someone needs a perfect char the could also scan him...

good artist will do some amazing things with it...
and bad artist bad things... lol...

This is what happens when you go away for a few days. I see nearly all the tools that I wanted personally have been implemented so Im pretty happy. The vector displacement for appendages will save time, I basically do that now but not been able to do the undercut for ears so this is really cool.

wow, vector displacement stamps.. cool, scary.. impressive. I'm so confused.

A really great feature list it looks like for 2011, looking forward to it. Anyone know the release date?

Thanks for sharing oglu!
Yeah, VDM is one of the big feature in this new version, I thought.
However, there aren't any rernder-able shaders yet,( such as Renderman, Mentalray and so on...only Modo, right?) when we'll render own models using the maps. So we need the shader as a publised from Autodesk or somewhere else...

But the feature would be very helpful when we sculpt some details.

Someone wrote a plugin for XSI years ago for use with vector displacements. Here's the thread from XSI Base, it's pretty interesting:

With 2011, it's pretty much a given that vector displacements will be given much more attention in the future, so I guess the wait won't be too long

those shader wont work with the mudbox VDMs...
cause the colors are different...

Oh yeah, you are right. That's too bad.
Btw that video is very interesting, there are so many nice new features in Mudbox 2011 that I am surprised Autodesk didn't properly showcase them with the announcement like they did for Maya's new features. But maybe I'm just being impatient!

These features are pretty much everything I personally wanted but I've been burnt so many times with this product since Autodesk took over. Every single release looks good on paper and videos but in the real world it just becomes a frustrating experience - I really do hope I'm wrong this time.

I hope mirroring works *properly* now.

I can't wait for this release to. I'm still using mudbox v1.07 and zbrush 3.5r3, because I get dissapointed everytime I try one of the Mudbox trials.

This one has everything I want. If this one pans out I'm looking forward to spending my money again on mudbox.

I have such a love hate relationship with zbrush. Those guys are geniuses, and zbrush is an amazing product, but I'm tired of jumping thru hoops to get it to do what I want. I'll still be using zbrush because there are so many good tools ,ie.. decimation master, new UV tools, and zshperes2, but for sculpting I still prefer mudbox and industry standard shortcuts.

You have probably already seen that Wayne Robson has released a free VDM shader for Max,Maya and XSI on Mudboxhub or CGTalk and The Area. PC only at the moment to go with MBx2011

Installed the trial today, the posing tools are great :)

I like the posing tool better than zbrush it seems easier to define your blend zone but I wish I could attach multiple objects to the joint, like posing a hand with separately modeled fingernails. Any body figured out if you can do this without binding skeleton in maya and importing fbx, or combining objects?

paint the weighting across the new objects...

Mudbox has now officially caught up with Zbrush and now i think surpassed it.

When i think of Mudbox i think, Zbrush with simplicity.

Not saying Zbrush is hard but there is a learning curve. I am one of those who do like the UI and if i was to use Mudbox would like to have the same customization (with regards to the UI).

But no Z user can argue the simplicity and functionality of the posing tools, texturing tools, concept tools and rendering capabilities and even the sculpting tools.

The ball is in Pixologic's court.

It won't take long, ZB4 is on his way ;)

But anyways Mudbox2011 rocks no doubt about that :)

I had two crashes in zbrush :(

All related to masking. Transpose and just regular brush masking. I hope they fix this area.

Z4 on the way, bring it on. I hope the big step that mudbox has taken will be returned by pixo. :)

Zbrush need to simplify the UI and dump the whole 2.5 thing but I guess thats not going to happen. You need some grunt in your machine to run mudbox and I find its sculpting experience becomes stodgy for lower levels when you have higher level layers. You really need to work more on your base forms in mudbox than zbrush. Just my opinion.
