So I'm a bit nervous too post on this site. Lots of mad talet here. But I need the crits so lets roll with it :).
So anyway, Heres an old project I decided to pick up again, The trenchcoat folds on the back have me puzzled. So any crits would be appreciated. If you know of any good ref for this thing I'd be really grateful.

Great to see you posting here Brett! Very nice model, I think I like the back folds of the first one better but then the ones at the bottom from the second version look nicer to me :) On the second version the fabric looks very thin on the back, also the pants folds make them look like a thin fabric (very busy towards the ankles).
Did you use references for this character? I'll try to find some for you.
Great model, lots of character clap
PS: The face looks awesome

hey Pascal, Thank you for the quick reply :bouncy:.
Its roughly based on norman rockwells Hobo and dog painting.

I think the folds in the 1st pic don't make sense to be honest. The folds mid way probably won't be there as he would be leaning forward causing the trench coat too pull over what ever he is sitting on. But I guess its all up too me on the direction for the folds and the story I'm trying to create.
So I've been back and forth with the folds on this matter. If only I could find a hobo in a trench coat sitting down cooking a sausage :P.
p.s. I agree that it looks very thin :)

Really fantastic model and source material! Love where you are going with this. For the wrinkles, I think your second pass at it looks a bit more coherent. I would suggest making the cloth feel a little stiffer like a coat, so broader folds, and more buckling to make it appear like a less flimsy material. It's hard to find reference pictures, but I found something that kinda conveys the idea of broader folds, not the best pic but something :)

Heres a couple of videos I have found usefull, I think he shows how to link the compression folds quite well.
I agree it looks like the folds should be broader with a few more starting downwards like from the tight area under the arms, some points around the shoulder blades, leading into the heavy pocket etc. maybe look for points of tension. The bottom of the left trouser leg is compressed but hanging in mid air, it needs to be resting on the shoe I guess. The hem of the coat appears larger than the diameter of the coat itself suggests?
I really like your character and the job you have done on his face. Keep on going........

Wow! Thanks all for the great crits. Keep them coming.
Leslie.button: Thanks! I totally agree about the bigger stiffer folds. Love your woman model.
collings: Hey Nick thanks for stopping in here man, Congrats on the cgsociety feature. Very cool:thumbsup:
Silva Spoon: Hey Bryan. Thanks for having a look. Love your machete.
tonytrout: Thanks for the crits! Yea I think your right about the hem of the coat. Good eye. I agree about the left leg hem, Though I did what the ref suggests. Maybe a bit of artistic interpretation is needed. hehe.
Those vids are great. I think I saw them before. Its mashru's right? Good stuff.

apologies if they were posted before, I lose track of stuff sometimes. Yea the more I look at it, it looks like the bottom of the coat is trying to drape like a bias cut ball gown, maybe look at leslies pic, the coat is holding its shape a lot, but its a pretty stiff coat, but not like the cloth coat you are doing.

I love it!! Great choice to put this painting into a model.About the trenchcoat.. I prefer the version with heavy fold on the back. Not sure if it would react that way, but it doesn´t look wrong. Even if his body is leaned forward, I think there would be some tension between the left and right pocket, like in your model.. maybe more subtle.
I would say, get a trenchcoat, and shoot some reference pictures to be sure ;)
Great work!

Great job! My only critique would be the hands. It'd be great to see his knuckles a bit more knobby and expressive!
Can't wait to see some shaders on this one!

Thanks for the kind words all.
I have some work too get through then I hope to get back to the Hobo asap.
I'm having second thoughts on his hair being sculpted and I may do it with shave and a hair cut rather:rofl:. At this rate I'm also considering only doing the bust:o. Though the clothing is a great exercise:banghead:.

Finally got more time for this guy. I opted for the "real" hair approach rather. I think it looks better :P. The render is still wip. The eyes need some tweaking and I haven't added fur for the brows yet eaither. The hands needs some tweaking and a colour map. There are collisions I need to sort out as well.. etc etc:rofl:

Fantastic, full of emotion. The one thing i noticed is that the whisker hair needs to be a little thicker than the main hair. As you age the beard gets more wiry and course especially as it turns grey.

Great work Brett! I would lower the subsurface a tiny bit , especially on the hands as they feel a bit waxy for an old man right now.
Also I would add a bit of noise in the hair to break up the parallel strands.
Nice to see some updates on this guy, looking great

hey sneaky!!! why didn't i see this yesterday? hehe
very nice update, buddy.
a few thoughts... i think the hair and especially beard could do with a bit more kraggle/noise as pascal also mentioned. maybe if you could make some spots, with more uneven hair/beard lenght. i guess he wouldn't get to the hair dresser too often.
i would love to see some of those kick *** details you got in the sculpt, shine more through.
you are closing in on that finished piece:rofl:

Hello all :). Thanks for the kind words and amazing crits. Keep the crits coming please
tiktok: Yup I agree 100 %. I just haven't got there yet :D.
handlebar: Haha. Cool name :). Yea I agree with this as well. I'll make the strands thicker thanks.
PascalR: Yea its looking very uniform atm. I did happen too meet a guy that looked really similar too my hobo. It was uncanny. I wanted too take pics of him for ref but thought it might be rude. His hair was very thin and straight. But it was groomed so there you have it :). I agree his a bit too gummy right now. The hands haven't been touched much. Still lots to do. Its one of those in it for the long run projects I guess ;)
jam-i-am: Hey man thanks:) The hair is just shave and a hair cut. No fancy tricks. I have hair caps, One for the beard and hair, one for the moustache. Rendered in mental ray as hair prims using p_hairTK. Its an awesome shader pavel provides, I really recommend it. I also turn on rapid hair in mental ray globals and turn on raytrace and fg. Its rendering as raytraced shadows in the lights. Detail shadows are faster but surprise surprise..Lack detail.
nielot007: Hehe. Thank you :)
rasmusW: Thats because I did a render last night :D. Yea as Pascal said the sss is too high. I also need too work the colour map more. Get a cavity map in there for the wrinkles and stuff..

This is turning out great Brett!! Besides what has been said the other thing that pops out to me is how uniform the wrinkles on the fingers are right now, maybe you can also add some more veins to his hand or it can just be I have very veiny hands myself =P. Really looking forward to this scene being finished!
Keep on rockin!
