Hey guys,

Here are my first steps for the challenge. This time I want to do something stylized and cartoony, just to try a different style.
I started with the generic human basemesh from mudbox and tweaked the proportions (also added some more geometry to the basemesh for the breasts).
Itīs an very early wip. On the right I did a quick photoshop paintover, just to get a sense of how she could look like ( I will have to try a lot of different hairstyles though)

Cool ! Nice to see other entries and different styles.
Although it is a cartoonish style, I'd put back some of the arm muscles to break the silhouette a bit.

Keep it up:beerchug:

Thanks Pascal, yes youīre right. I will take care of that. And the shoulders seem to be to bulky in relation. More volume on the arms might solve this problem, too.

Some more wips, just a few minor tweaks and a quick test for the boots.
Hmm.. the butt looks really flat, when I see it now... Have to fix it tomorrow.

Itīs a lot of fun to sculpt pretty girls ( at least I hope she will look pretty in the end) :beerchug:

More tweaks..

I stretched the legs a lot, added some make up and a slip and worked on the forms. Still a lot of work to do. Hands and arms are not done yet.
But the most important, she has some nipples now :p

She does indeed :) Her face look quite flat from the side view, maybe try to push the eyes in a little bit, and pull out the nose bridge/forehead.

Keep it up:beerchug:

Nice to see a cartoon style figure, it has a lot of possibilities :) From the side the lower tummy looks a bit full too, but the nipples are spot on so to speak :)

Glad you like the nipples ;)
And thanks for the feedback, I will take a look at the mentioned areas.
Arms and hands are coming next. Itīs always a big challenge to create beautyful female hands, they can make it or brake it. So.. back to work :)

A couple of quick hairstyle doodles I did this evening. I donīt care about beeing precise at this stage. They are just meant to get an idea.

I vote for the one on the right
Nice :)

Yeah, I also think itīs a little bit more unique than the left one.
I really have to rethink about the style I want to go. I didntīwant a realistic style this time, but itīs not really stylized or simplified either.

My vote for the right one. Nice hairs research and her face is really pretty. Good work!

Thanks for the votes guys :) Keepīem coming.

I think before I can make a decision I have to develop a pose, though. Everything goes hand in hand, so the rhytm of the pose can affect the appearance of a hairstyle a lot. So I should work on that next.

I agree with all of the other votes, the hairstyle on the right looks a lot more interesting than the one on the left. Left side's style is a little to bland.

Ok, I will definately go with the right one.
Spent some more time in zbrush+photoshop to develop the idea further.
Not sure about the the accessoirs yet, but I have to start somewhere.
The planes sticking out of the head might be replaced with some kind of feathers.

I agree, the flower is a nice touch.
just one thing, the ears could use a little more anatmy detailing eventhough it is stylized.
She looks beautiful, nice style!

Really enjoy your treatment of her hair Manuel. The flower and feathers could ad a nice detail and an air of class to her overall appearance.
Did you have a concept piece up at one point? I cannot seem to find your pose/atmosphere/feel piece?

Using a less realistic interpretation should in no way detract from what your final render can be. Some of the best pieces of art are very far from photo real.

In the modern CG vane of pin-up art I believe Andy H (http://andyh.cgsociety.org/gallery/807964/) is quite good, and none of his characters are realistic.

Keep at it and it should look great.

Thanks a lot Aumakua!

mel_danes: I have several reference pictures and use them as a guide. I had a picture in my mind and then searched for photos with a similar type of woman/pose/mood etc. I will post them later together with some rough sketches of the whole picture. But it will take some while, Iīm still experimenting. Thanks for your comment!

Nice! I don't know if the legs are too long or the head too small but something with the proportions is bothering me

Cool stuff though

The head looks pretty small indeed, now that youīve mentioned it, something is really bothering me too, thanks :)

Itīs just some kind of thumbnail sketch which will help me to develop the picture.

Thanks Intervain :)

I did some more work on the body, trying to find the right proportions.
There is still something bothering me with the head and neck size.
Hands and feet are still very wip. The knees needs some work, I may try to find a simplified shape for it, but it would make sense to make that after the posing.
I also think I could exaggerate the curvature of the sillouette more, especially between the torso/hip area.
You may have some suggestions. :)

She looks pretty:thumbsup: Apart from the areas you've mentioned I would either push in the outer edges of the shoulders on each sides or move the arms out a little bit to smooth out the shoulder silhouette (biceps/shoulder connection). I like the body proportions, you could go more extreme, but I find this version quite nice (maybe arms are slightly too long).

cheers

She looks quite nice Manuel. I might push in the waist and hips a bit make the thighs a bit shorter and the lower legs a bit longer but its a matter of personal taste really. I like the work you have done on breasts and torso, spot on with your style

mel_danes
27-03-2010, 11:44 AM
She looks very nice. :)
The diminutive breast size is a very welcome trait, feminine without being excessive. Quite apropos.
The head is the right size for me, she has a good skull shape and brow structure, ears are placed well and sculpted accurately. Her neck seems a little thick for her head but that's all a matter of taste.
Her shoulders, hips, nethers, thighs, and calf's all deviate from the classical 8 head proportion. I'm all for style and change but if you were wondering what she would look like that way...here you go.

1083

A.) Love this face, and hair treatment. Using her head for the rest of the proportion comments and measurements.

B.) Her shoulders need to be moved out some, a little narrow. By placing the arms out, without beefing them up. The adjusted image shows this enhancement. Two heads I believe is the norm. Her overall chest could be adjusted for this too, I liked a smaller bust line with broader shoulders...either way it's your call.

C.) The fourth head is usually above the nethers aligned with the wing part of the pelvis. Also depending on genetic disposition women carry weight above the thigh, on the thigh, around the hip or below the hip. If the hip bone is flaired and a good amount of flesh is present you get the extreme hourglass figure as displayed by some popular hip hop models. Here I have adjusted her weight down further on her butt and thighs. She could use some more mass on the inside of her thighs, women gifted with these attributes rarely have them on only the outside of their legs.

The curve you are looking for can be further enhanced by pose and posture rather than overt model changes. Women do not assume Pin-up poses in real life. When photographers and artists want that look they over arch the back and thrust out the chest and hip for maximum exaggeration.

D.) Her calves seemed short to me, adjusting for the head proportion lengthens them and adds some mass as well. That long sultry leg draped over the other knee requires long calves. I would not worry overmuch about her toes, it looks like you were putting her in shoes.

Your base model is looking very good as is. I like where you are going with her design, very Fritz Willis, and look forward to more updates.

Thanks a lot for taking the time, great feedback :)

Yes, I didnīt follow the 8 head measurement, in fact I never use any predefinied or idealized formulas to create characters.
I always move things around until I get something I want. But I like some of the changes, she looks a bit taller than I want her to be, but this 8 head chart is a pretty good guide. I can use this kind of rules and break them if needed.

I agree, I can get a lot of the wanted curvature once it is posed and exaggerate things from there.
With a stylized look and especially because I work towards a 2d still image, I might be able to cheat a little bit to get the look I want for the final image.

Hope to get some work done over the weekend and give you some more updates, glad you like so far. :)

Havenīt worked on the girl over the last week.
Just a reference chart this time, so you might get an idea in which direction I will go. I will use dark colors, purple, black, dark reds,yellow/gold, pale skin for a nice contrast. The pose will be something like the one on the upper right, but that might change.
I will work on a necklace/neck corset next and hopefully post a wip over the weekend.

Manuel Poehlau
05-04-2010, 09:37 AM
The lace border was placed with a spline/path deformation and gets stretched at tight angles. I have to look for a solution or fix it by hand.
Not sure if I will keep the net pattern. But this is the way I did it

The clothing options are indeed staggering. Once you have it decided it should come together quickly.

Are you going to go with an actual corset/bustiere? In you refs, again great collection there, the young lady in the middle on the right has a nice skirt/train attached to her corset. Could make a nice bit.
Also the model on the lower left has a nice lace scallop on her's, which could tie into the neck piece. The lower left body pose is the best, just adjust her head. My opinion anyway.

Another way to go is to contrast materials. If you use a lace neckline then use satin gloves and sleek stockings you could go with a lace covered shoe.
See Here. (http://befaithfulbefabulous.files.wordpress.com/2009/12/valentino-lace-dorsay.jpg)
The specularity difference betweeen these fabrics would look nice, and neither gets over used this way.

Keeping the contrast but inverting the implimentation. Go with a satin shoe and a lace welt on the stocking. This way the neck piece and the top of the leg match and the gloves and shoes match.
Shoe ideas Wild (http://shoesandcocktails.files.wordpress.com/2008/12/feather-shoes.jpg) Ribboned (http://www.hiendless.com/images/ChristianLouboutinEvening/qc064.jpg) Retro. (http://theblackcatcloset.com/ebay/Bliss-38.jpg)
Stocking ideas Contrast Opaque (http://www.trashy.com/Contrast-Lace-Top-Stockings.2680-product.htm) Contrast with bow (http://www.trashy.com/Contrast-Lace-Top-Stockings-with-Bow.11435-product.htm) French Lace Fishnet. (http://www.secretsinlace.com/product/441/Thigh_High_Stockings)

All of these collections could be mined for ideas. This one in particular looks familiar....nudge,nudge (http://www.trashy.com/Burlesque-Nurse-Bra.9930-product.htm)

Itīs exactly the kind of refs Iīm looking for.

I was also thinking of some long satin gloves and shoes with lace, they look really nice.

Glad to help. This challenge is a move in the right direction for proper CG art. There are plenty of juevenile depictions of the female form; so to have a contest focused on alluring, sultry yet seductive women is so refreshing.

Men tend to fixate on a particular aspect of the female form, from much of the art produced it would seem breasts are a particular favorite. Don't get me wrong, I'm not judging others preferences, I think we can all agree women have plenty of wonderful forms to be enchanted by.

Some of us just appreciate the clothed figure over the raw nude.;)
So without further ado....

Concerning gloves, a plain satin opera glove is nice but we don't have to stop there.
It is entirely possible to add further detail to it as well. Beware some of these images are HUGE, make nice wallpapers though, others are quite small.

This (http://images.buycostumes.com/mgen/merchandiser/38821.jpg) glove uses simple buttons to add a touch of sophistication, and can be seen modeled here (http://www.wildnites.co.nz/wild_store/images/12BBL.jpg). Trending more in the Pascal direction.
Another way to go would be to add the strap element from the bodice, evidenced here (http://www.kult-klothes.com/130-231-thickbox/gothic-opera-gloves-satin.jpg).
There is also the option of using a shorter glove style (http://cn1.kaboodle.com/hi/img/b/0/0/a/8/AAAACzw5RooAAAAAAAqAdQ.jpg) and maybe including different fabric choices.

Lastly some of the finest examples of delicate lace and satin gloves can be found in bridal catalouges. If we simply change up the direction, IE a colour other than white, any of them can be used for our purposes.
A simple glove with bow (http://image.made-in-china.com/2f0j00gedtUSOKkLoj/Classical-Bridal-Gloves-2104-.jpg), or fingerless with elbow applique (http://wed-shopping.com/photos/wedding_gloves_R1006dl_1.jpg), and fingerless with wrist applique (http://www.1freeaday.com/pda1/images/1/0/0/0/7/6/3/5//inset.jpg).

I leave you with this (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_xKMUDN9Asyc/SteddUSLH3I/AAAAAAAAA8g/xQErL0QUB6E/s320/vicsecret+gloves.jpg), a great example of the power of "Proper" accessories.

Thanks for all your efforts in this contest Manuel.
