A while ago I tried to make a realistic hand as a technical exercise. I used alphas to get file details, but I probably should have spent more time on the medium level details first to be honest. Any tips or crits welcome.

Hey Greg! Great to see you posting here. Think the hand looks awesome, the only thing I can pick out is the alpha work on the underide of the arm past the wrist it looks a bit strong for that area.
Cant wait to see more work.

Stills from a test render. Please ignore the horrible attempt at a shirt cuff :)

Great to see you here as well Greg! My only critique would be on the closed hand, the compression of the skin on the fingers seems like it might need to be a bit more extreme.

Render is looking very nice!
can't wait to see more!!! The fingerprints look fantastic!

:welcome:Greg, great to have you onboard :)

Great work, I agree with tiktok about the compression, some areas look just a bit flat to me.

Here are a few crappy photos of my hand I just took to explain.
And I know my hand is bulgier (have to go on diet) than the reference you must have used, but I thought it would show you what I mean.

Cheers!

Pascal

Good lord, I'd love to see the texture map of that hand. Outstanding work, though I agree with the above critique.

Thanks for the suggestions, that's awesome feedback Pascal!
It's amazing how complicated real hands are, they change so much with slight differences in pose. It's humbling, the real thing is orders of magnitude beyond anything I can hope to achieve in 3d.
BrettSinclair, yep, vray.
PaulAdams, the diffuse map is pretty simple actually.

You're very welcome Greg, thanks again for sharing your great works here:thumbsup:

I took the liberty to edit your post so that the map shows up full size instead of thumbnail size.
You can follow the link in my signature for instructions.

Can't wait for more updates :)

cheers!

Very nice work. I'm curious what your approach was for the micro detail of the finger prints etc.

Wow, these renders are spot on ! The amount of details is insane. I think the only thing really bothering me is the lack of tendons going from the forearm to the wrist. I think that could add a bit to the realness of the model.

Very nice work. I'm curious what your approach was for the micro detail of the finger prints etc.

Well, I don't want to speak in the name of 'gjpetch', but generaly for this type of details(better say micro details) the best way to approach it is via texture, meaning that hardest part will be getting your color map clean(without seams and streching) and once you finish your color map you can 'easily' get bump(or displacement), spec or any other map from that color texture.

Second option is to scan your hand and project details onto your retopo hand.

And third option is manual work :) It's time consuming, but it's possible... espacialy in todays era of hi-res sculpting softwares. :beerchug:

Seeing that the detail was present in the actual sculpt I wondered about the technique for achieving that cos I thought deriving it from a photo you wouldn't get a very clear result. I guess you could make finger prints and scan that to use as a stencil/stamp.

Cheers everyone.
The micro detail was done with custom alphas. The fingerprint part just comes from a fingerprint image I found online, detail elsewhere comes from hand painted custom alphas, and some of the standard zbrush alphas (I found that the alpha that looks like wavy vertical lines worked surprisingly well), and a little bit of touching up by hand where necessary.
LetsEatSomeBananes mentioned the tendons. I left the tendons a bit superficial in the zbrush sculpt because I've got tendon displacement set up separately in max as part of the rig.

Thats the kind of superfluous attention to detail that I can really appreciate. Great job!

Another work in progress, excuse the big image. It's a really old zbrush model (Very much Patrick Woodroffe inspired) that I'm trying to make into a finished image.
I've been trying to work out a way to make this image more interesting, I want to add some element that suggests a story or something. It seems a bit too boring, a bit too static, and a bit too "nice" as it stands. Suggestions and ideas would be very welcome!

very nice render Greg! Reminds me of some works we've done on Bridge to Terabithia. Well if you don't mind going humorous, maybe he could try to get the poor snail out of his shelf :) (the snail would get badly stetched) Just a stupid thought to start the day :D

very nice!

It probably feels static because of the composition only,
the character has a very static pose so I an not sure a centered composition is helping.
the lighting is paradoxal as well to me, the shell being the focus of the main character it should get more light, most of it is in the shadow
the strong highlights on the grass are distracting from the character to me as well.

I see so much potential in this I hope you will push it further, it is already highly evocative

Hey man was just admiring your amzing work and thought id say so :notWorthy:

and if you would accept my humble opinion i think having the fly dude trying to put on the shell as a hat or something or peering up into in over his head would make a cool composition.. maybe even a few empty shells around him and have him sitting down trying to scrape out the snail or something :P

anyways keep up the good work man!

hey greg!

it's always a pleassure to see your work.
i think sam.balzer's suggestions sounds really fun.
a more simple suggestion could be, spead the legs out a bit more rotating one foot outwards etc. -maybe also leaning "his" head to one side, like he was wondering what that inside the shell. lastly you could fan out the fingers on one of his hands or make the pinky stick out.

about the hands you done... i just stumbled across a intresting .pdf (atleast for me) on rendering hands. not sure if you use the same setup.
anyway here's the link.

i'll post it in the reference thread aswell.

When zbrush 3.5 came out I made quite a few zsketch models, lots of fun. I never quite managed to bring any of them to a finished level though... I'll find the motivation one day!

nice face, some pretty cool detailing going on here. Although I always find tricky to really judge a model with this shader as you may not recover all of the fine details at render time.
Nice one
