Hi all,
So here it is , our first challenge!
Let's create cg pinups, 3d or 2d, the idea is to get a sense of vintage glamour, let's all put some sexy pixels together and most importantly let's have some fun!
Here is a great source of inspriation that Collings posted in the reference thread:
http://www.thepinupfiles.com/index.html
Our current deadline is 30th of June 2010.
Accepted Categories
3D : using any 3d packages
2D : using any painting applications
Any of the submitted works should represent a female, preferably full figure,
could be human, alien, cyborg (but not a robot).
Any pornographic/obscene contents will result in disqualification of the
contestants.
Image Resolution: The minimum image resolution should be 1000 pixels wide and/or 1368 pixels high. Obviously the higher the resolution the better, as it involves more work for detailing.
Our judges:
Peter Syomka : Senior/Lead modeller at Weta Digital
http://nz.linkedin.com/in/petersyomka
Michel Kinfoussia: Lead Lighter/Compositor at PDI/Dreamworks
http://www.linkedin.com/in/mkinfoussia

used and give credits to any re used work.

hey I'm new here and thought this would be a nice way of joining a community. I have a few questions though....
1. when is the deadline?
2. does the model have to be a full figure or could it just be from the waist and up (just the upper torso, head, and arms)?
cheers,
Idan

I think we need at least 3 months to get high quality works.
I will update the first post soon with more details, I'd rather see full figure models but this is not mandatory at this point.
cheers

Hey Tomaya, yeah futuristic pin up... why not as long as she is glamorous.
Are you thinking of recycling your current cyborg ? ;)
I was thinking more of the 50's - 60's pin ups but hey if she is sexy then why not.
cheers

i've seen the header up here for quite a while, and it's been on my mind to give this a shot. if you guys are going with 3 months, then i might be game... depends on some other challenges going on during this particular stretch of time. if i'm feeling the topic of this year's DW, i may have to give that priority since i didn't compete last year... otherwise, i'm totally down for this one. got my reference stacked in already tbh and a source poster i'm really big fan of. all boils down to when you guys decide to OFFICIALLY start this shin dig :)

Still preparing things to get sponsors, but the deadline will more than likely be towards end of May. There is no reason to rush here, and I know doing things properly definitely takes time ;)

PascalR - Couple questions about the contest. I apologize if these were already addressed, I could not find the answers elsewhere.
What resolution do you want the final images to be rendered?
Is it one set of prizes for 2d and 3d?
The subculture of Pin-up has a broad interpretation depending on whom you ask. By all rights a standard, boring, yet still quite lovely Playboy centerfold is a "pin up"; yet in my mind it is not what I think of when I envision the mission of this contest.
The rules bar the use of lewd and inappropriate material, IE Porn, but don't really define what is acceptable. Cheesecake, Noseart, Betty Page, Dita, modern interpretations of the pin-up look. Is it a kind of all comers welcome just keep it clean?
Thanks
PS. Great to see you here Mr. Harford

These are all good points mel_danes, I'll update the first post with answers soon.
Although I did send a link to what we thought was in the vein of the contest in the first post.
However we don't want to constrain too much our contestant, so I think basically all the references you've mentioned are acceptable as long as there is no obscene content. Mild nudity is also acceptable.
It is only one set of prizes for both 2d and 3d for now. A 2d submission will have just as much chances to win the challenge as a 3d entry.
Hope this helps , I'll update the rules with these info + resolution.
Thanks for the feedback

Hello all !
I'm planning to take part in this comp later, but I wonder if I could use a pic reference as base for modeling, I mean a drawing not of mine ?
(sorry for my english :o)
PascalR
03-25-2010, 09:06 AM
yeah as long as you're mentioning your inspiration. Best would be to ask the design's author for his authorization, but you should be fine as long as the author gets credited.
It's always nice to deviate from the reference and create your own piece though ;)
Looking forward to seeing your submissions!

03-25-2010, 09:21 AM
Ok for mentioning the original artist, even it will be hard to have their approval (especially for vintage pin-up, they are almost all dead :D).
About the "personal touch", I think it can be included in the interpretation of the drawing, translating it from 2d to 3d, and tuning materials to have the same rendering...

You could basically do a fully rendered 3d model as a 3d illustration or a 2d painting as you wish.
Hope this helps

Hello, I'm new here again actually this my first post, I am willing to participate in this contest and I wonder if I can use an image of an artist as reference to make my 3d model?
PascalR
06-17-2010, 06:54 PM

Come on guys, less than 2 weeks to go

Hi guys,
Just a reminder that the final image resolution should be 1000 pixels wide and/or 1368 pixels high.
Please submit a final image in your thread even if it is not 100% finished.
This will allow the judges to review images more easily.
Thanks all and keep up the great works (only a few days left).

I don't know why but I thought yesterday was the 1st. I'm so mad at myself for mixing that up. I could have had a whole extra day to work on my pin up. Oh well I saw the competetors pin ups and I doubt my chances to place were all that great anyways. I still plan on perfecting my pin up anyways. Thanks again Pascal for putting on this awesome challenge. :-)
