I always thought that specialization meant either am an animator a character artist , environment , lighting ........ all these stuff.
but seeing alot of artwork done by alot of great artists here and there got me thinking lots of them specialize even deeper for example " CARTOON " character modeler (just an example)......... the point is , does this really works better in learning process ? I mean should I focus on specific category and leave the rest ?

I Was thinking about this for a very long time and thought of knowing what does everyone think about it , hope my English is understandable :beerchug:

Over specialize, and you breed in weakness. Motoko Kusanagi

I mean if you have the energy and willing, try to do everything you can, it's always good to have multiple strings to your bow :) You don't know what tomorrow will bring!
Working in an area also makes others areas benefit from that work, you are getting faster, more efficient, develop learning technics and abilities.
That being said it's also great to have a strong speciality.

IMHO, the key is the ability to learn and adapt quickly :)

I was already thinking about that, and my conclusion is, someone will be hired for his best skills, if you are better at modeling you should try to improve as much as possible your talent for this field, but you can have a kind of "package" such as, rigging, skinning texturing, shading, in your skillset, then you can stay wired to other specifications, as animation for exemple, and technically meet the needs of other departments.
But I'm aslo agree with you Thomas, adaptation is everything, like Bruce Lee says Don't get set into one form, adapt it and build your own, and let it grow, be like water. Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless — like water. Now you put water in a cup, it becomes the cup; You put water into a bottle it becomes the bottle; You put it in a teapot it becomes the teapot. Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.
So if you are a character modeller, you'll have to adapt your style to the art direction, you will have no style as style or the style of no style that is the question.

Ultimately though i depends on where you're planning to work. Smaller companies might require you to be a jack of all trades, while bigger ones require specialization. That said, it's good to know a little bit of everything. Modelers can make a rigger/animator's job easier if he knows a thing or two about it.

Amazing Quotes indeed
Kel Solaar : So you think the key is specialize but not over specialize
kenshiro : yea very true , I did like that water quote alot
ashrafazlan : yup that`s another point of view for the subject you are right about that.

Thanks Alot guys for the great thoughts and for sharing them with me :D

So my conclusion is I have to be very good in what I want or "My specialization" and adapt according to the direction required and also know alittle of everything else
