Nice job so far. The eye lids look a bit too thin. Also, it would be nice to see some different kinds of edges, right now you have a lot of rounded edges. It would be nice if there were some variety in edge types. Rounded edges transitioning from hard edges for example. Perhaps an area that could benefit from this would be the nasolabial furrow or the lower eyelid furrow.

Very nice WIP! Do you have photo references to compare with? The eye bag folds stands out a tiny bit too much, is the small bump on the rhs eyebrow intentional? Great ears, very nice start!
Can't wait for the next update clap

thanks for the feedback, I tried to rework the eyes a bit giving the eyelids more thickness and shape.

hehe that bump on the eyebrow was a mistake, might try to make it a feature tho.
Heres a quick turntable too. The back of the head hasnt been modeled yet.

Nice!, I'd have to agree with silva spoon regarding the nasal labial fold, it'd be nice to have it more defined and sharper.
Very cool work, keep it up!
PS: did you start from your dragon slayer head? ;)

Thanks Pascal. In fact I didnt use the dragon slayer base, I felt like modeling a new one from scratch. I'll post it up later.
For now heres some clothes i made this afternoon.

nice clothing, are you planning on doing some facial expression? Is this going to be a bust only?
Nice work:thumbsup:

Thanks Pascal and Mag.
Yes this is going to be a bust only that I want to put on my next demo reel.
I did some texturing on the face and wipped up a quick render to see how its looking. Need to go back to the ears and tweak them a bit.

Cool! Nice to see some colors on this guy:beerchug: The forehead and lips look quite smooth imho, I would add fine wrinkles there, are you planning on adding more bump break up?
Looking forward to the next textures update!
Cheers

Great update!! can't wait to seeing your finishing work!

this is coming along nicely. having textured eyes in there is beginning to sell this. i think the eyes could get just a little bit whiter. also, the ear is bothering me a bit, and i think its the fact that the helix is a bit too long and too low as it comes towards the front of the face. hopefully that made sense....if not i'll draw up a diagram

This is really coming along Chris!! Im sure you will fix but just in case if you don't see the seam is visible underneath his jaw line going to the back of the neck. Love the fabric sculpting on him as wellclap

I really like how this is progressing. I agree with Pascal about the forehead being too smooth. I stand by my early critique that this head could be improved by varying the edge types. Some finer sharper wrinkles or folds could bring this up a notch imo. Perhaps some crows feet memory wrinkles.

Yes Im yet to get to the bump map but I want to get more detail in there like suggested. Soon as I get the color map sorted i'll work on that :)

bit more tweaking on the skin shader
Still havn't done the detailing but will get on to that this weekend.

Love the eyes and ears clap

Very good work ! ... ....hairs ?...eye brows ?...eye lashes i know , it's a big part...
but for me, it must be 3d , the shadows of the eye lashes are very important for a realistic character , it's very subtil but it's there... ...somewhere.
What is your plan ?
Porkpie Samurai
27-02-2010, 03:30 PM
Tomaya: I have eyelashes in there already, not sure what to do for the hair just yet. that will be the next stage i think.
Its subtle but I tweaked the bump and spec today.

Subtle but very nice. I would still have the forehead, tip of nose and lips shinier. At least tighter spec on these areas.
Great work:thumbsup:

coming along really nice. the spec feels quite good on that near cheek and nasal labial fold and the slight rim light gives the shade side some nice definition. the one part i'm noticing is the neck area feels a bit dry and crunchy. i think it needs some spec

i am thinking about there is a strong rim light on his shoulder and it may has some rim light around the edge of the head.
This model turns great , go go go :bouncy:

Nice update. The strong highlight on the coat is a bit distracting.

Starting texturing the jacket. Now that I've done some renders I think I need to go back and do more modeling to catch some highlights.

nice! I feel like the jacket could use some fresnel to look more like velvet, it feels a bit like plastic right now. Also the yellow and purple parts of the clothing seem to be crashing into each others.
Keep it up! looks great

Cool! The spec feels much better now. Clothes are well done.
I find the eyelashes a little bit distracing, maybe they´re too thick?!
Waiting for updates :)

Thanks, Yeah I need to play some more but I wanted to get the jacket looking like leather. Right now I think the problem is it doesnt have the weight that leather does so I need to go back and do some modeling changes on the jacket.
Heres a quick update of the shading so far.

Very nice. I like the feel of the materials, the contrast between velvet and leathery look. The scratches in the middle of the jacket could be more random, they seem a little bit to parallel.

Nice update of the jacket shader I like it much better, the purple waistcoat texture looks very busy and might work better if it was following more the bump pattern you have (lines).

I'm really liking this. The clothing textures are coming together great.
The head textures are also looking great. Nice renders as well. What renderer are you using?
My biggest concern is his eyebrows. They seem really high up. So if he had to do a surprised expression it would need to go even higher up. But you do get people out there with brows that high. So its just a matter of opinion really:p.

Hey Brett great to hear from you.
Using Mental Ray in maya to render
Thanks for the feedback and I totally agree
dont know how i missed that but they are an inch or so too high.
cheers.

I`m a bit of a pedantic person when it comes to period fashion and a leather jacket on a Victorian gentleman is not working for me... also the big zigzag stitch really jumps out and I`m not awfully keen on the stretching in the stripes on the side of the bust... I like the model a lot and I think a silk velvet collar would have worked far better on him or perhaps a beautiful Victorian style wolf fur collar in rich colours :)
sorry for the tirade :) I just think the beautiful work you`ve done on the face deserves a better framing

The striped leather keeps on saying courderoy to me hehe. Anyway I think its beautiful work and looking forward to your hair solution :) clap

Thanks for the feedback
Magdalena : I appreciate the honest feedback, it did influence me to go back and change the jacket shader to more of a softer fabric material which im still going to tweak a bit more.
Thanks Tony
Caj: Cheers man, glad to hear you like it.
Cause of my hair phobia Ive tried to get around it by modeling a hat. I still will have some hair for sideburns which im about to start working on soon.

Nice, I like the jacket, almost looks a bit dusty now :) Cool hat too, fresnel might a bit strong on it, I would just add some color variation on the shirt collar, colour map feels like solid white right now. Maybe very fine wrinkles on the collar would help breaking up the surface a bit more.
Can't wait for the hair update!

Nice hat! I agree that the fresnel effect might be a bit too strong.
It´s coming together pretty well, though i wish you would do a complete body for him ;)
However, keep working

Really nice man, it's certainly coming around! I agree that the shirt collar will need a few subtle wrinkles in it to really sell it. Maybe a little bit of scatter and fresnel as well to get it feeling less blinn like. But overall its really turning into a killer piece, good job!

much better - glad you softened the look of the jacket :) The hat is a col touch

12-03-2010, 10:10 AM
that's looks great already! face's still a lil too red.
I'm not sure if you are planning to still work on it, but the only thing that is really bothering me is the white shirt collar geo...it still looks too geometrical in my opinion. try to break the edges up a bit and put some little wrinkles... I think you don't need to go to crazy to have a nice result there...

Looking good :)
Your hair should be fairly simple since the hardest part to do is the hair-line usually and you haven't got much showing towards the camera.
Maybe some inspirational guidance ?

My first post on this forum will be for you Porkpie Samurai!
Your Victorian dude is just so woaw... superb work, I really dig it ;)
Few more tweaks concerning light&contrast would definitely improve it in my opinion if you plan to keet that same shot that is). Keep it up :)
