I'm interested in peoples stories about how they got that elusive first position and what sort of role it was.

I am still trying to get my foot in the door, be nice to hear other people's experiences.

I was randomly 'discovered' on a new york subway. I used to carry a ball of clay in my pocket and sculpt people on the subway train on my commute. One day some weird guys followed me out of the subway. They stopped me and said "you ever done that professionally?". They invited me to see their shop. There, they offered me a job doing makeup fx sculpting stuff. Was pretty happenstance.

I was hired by Cryo interactive after doing some tests, to work on a game called "Second world" (virtual Paris). I was quite excited to work there as I loved the game called "megarace" at that time :)
Actually I remember being so stressed on my first day, that I couldn't model anything

good old time

Cheers

I got my first job as a character modeler in a animated studio called Blue Spirit production. The supervisor had worked a couple years before in the studio where i did my internship during my last year study. So it grabbed his attention on my application . Also he told me that he had hired me because he saw in my portfolio some "speed sculpts" done in zbrush, he liked the fact that i could model fast and well which is always appreciated in a production environment.

I got hired by Luma Pictures while attending Gnomon. A good friend of mine got hired there to work on Underworld: Evolution, a few months after he got in he passed my reel along because they were looking for a few more modelers and texture artists. I got an interview and a day later started working..it was a great first gig

Hi there ! First post here.

I discover sfx and matte painting through a TV Show called movie magic that I used to watch when I was a kid.
Few years later I just got graduate of a 3D university and I didn't really know what to do, I opened Photoshop and started to work on a picture. I didn't know that matte painting existed in France.
I discover few website, people, and 3 months later, after I've worked alone on a first Portfolio, I went into a vfx french company named Mikros Images.

I made my first step there, before going in London at Dneg and MPC.
