Hello guys, My name is Jason and I'm a Student at San Jose State University. I am a CG major but at the moment I am required to take traditional Illustration classes, this is my first project in this class. We will have to paint traditionally an organic environment.
My story is the discovery of the new world by Columbus. I want the view point of him on the new land looking out back to where he came from. Since I'm really new to illustration it would be amazing if anyone could give me crits on my sketch. Thank you all for taking the time.

It's always good to have a strong traditional background preferably 'before' you do CG. Which is probably why they have you doing Trad before CG.
Anyway.
I'm liking it so far. The values are nice and it makes it feel like the sun is going down. You also have a pretty nice perspective. Is that triangle part at the bottom supposed to be the ship? Cause that's cool.
I'd say some things, especially the cliffs are looking really soft. I mean rocks and stuff vary, but maybe you should add in some sharper spots. References help if you aren't using any.
The clouds and the overall atmosphere is looking really good atm.
Hope you're planning on coloring, it could add a lot to the piece.
Er...hope this help at least a little lol.

Thank you for your so much feedback! Yea I agree need to sharpen the cliffs for sure. The triangle part is actually going to me another land mass ( a ship would be cool though but everything in the scene must be organic =( ) and yea I will be doing color comps once im done with the black and white image.
