Hi guys,

I thought I would move this from my sketchbook to WIP as I am now focusing on this particular oaint over.

Here is my wip paint over (done with Corel Painter):

And the original 3dcoat model:

C&C are welcome :beerchug:

Its got real depth, the overlapped and receding edges are particularly well done, to my eyes, Im having a little trouble discerning fleshy areas from bony areas as they are pretty much holding the same colouring, very nice btw, for instance the nostril area says to me moist and darker like a dogs nose whereas the skull ridge behind the ears says pale and bony like a crabshell, and the head ridges chitinous. Just my 2c worth :beerchug:

Thanks Tonytrout, that's true it looks quite monochrome right now.

Will try to add more color and spec variations.

Thanks ! :beerchug:

There's also an interesting trick that you can do with a single layer to add organic detail. You can duplicate it, change its blending mode, and then mask it in while adjusting Hue, Saturation, and levels. The result is a shift in tone and color that is still based on the original and ties it together, but which allows you to really define certain areas precisely. It's very organic. So for example you could take your base texture, duplicate it, and shift it to be a bit warmer for soft tissue areas. Then create a mask for it and mask in the areas you like.

And it's all from a single texture layer, which lets you build detail from a common foundation up first before adding new layers for extra details.

Say, I notice you used 3DCoat for this. What do you think of it? I've messed around with the demo, but I'm considering it as a texturing tool.

looking cool pascal , the sculpt has a great organic feel to it. the painting is a bit saturated for my taste, however, I could see it working if you balanced saturated areas together. I think having the same splotchy breakup and tone all over is detracting from it. it would be cool to see the forehead into the nose more saturated while the cheeks and side of the head go back a bit in saturation. I guess what I'm getting at is some sort of patterning to the saturation

looking pretty cool Pascal. I would suggest adding some sort of patterns to break up the soft look of the texturing, something to contrast it in areas.
Look forward to seeing more, I really need to take a look at 3d coat sometime.

thanks guys for the constructive comments, much appreciated.
Here is a quick update, still want to work on the skin more, introduce patern as Porkpie Samurai suggested, and need to refine spec under the eyes, etc...
I tried to keep all comments in mind, but will keep working on it.
Cheers

Round the neck on the collar reminds me of the gills of a mushroom

maybe details its bit more like that?

Thanks Tom for the ref, reminds me of some mushrooms I did for a movie with blue people...
Thing is, and I realize it is not clear as it is still rough, the collar and red part are supposed to be clothing. but I'll make sure it is more obvious. :)

looks pretty awesome man I dig the patterns. I would suggest maybe darkening the edges of some of the larger spots or outlining them with a lighter colour to improve the contrast. Might look cool :)

that's a pretty neat paintover :) love it.
The collar part made me also thing of a mushroom more than a piece of cloth but i'm looking forward to see how it progess though.

The lack of any real cast shadow throws my eye, and I think the lips could have a different texture/material quality then the rest of the skin. Also the spec/reflection hit on the eye is too soft, needs a much harder edge.
