View Full Version : Dragon Slayer

Ive been working on some concept sketches lately for a project I have in mind. Heres some images of a dragon slayer design. The idea behind it is that he has to do a lot of rock climbing to get to his prey so he'll have ropes and hooks as well as climbing harness apparatus.
http://www.porkpiesamurai.com/gallery/pers/dragonslayer/dragonslayer8.jpg
Heres a sketch of his axe which he will have two of. The axe also doubles as a sort of rock climbing tool to aid him on his climb.

Im going to start modeling soon but would like to hear any suggestions or crits. :)
cheers

Nice concept!
So is he fighting dragons with his axe only, or will he have more protections and weapons?
Cool stuff!

Definitely Reign of Fire inspired. Not sure about the "scarf".

very cool, nice design on the axe. the head feels a bit big, i don't know how much you're going to go off that concept for proportions though. looking forward to seeing some modeling on this

These are great sketches. :drool:Crampons here have spikes at the toes although they are usually for ice they sure look cool, he might want some knee protection at the top of his shin pads as well :sw: He looks like the kind of guy who would fight a dragon with a flame thrower so goggles might come in handy he he :)

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'm trying to think of some sort of accesories that will help define him a bit better. Starting to do some sculpting. I haven't really done much in terms of human modeling before but enjoying the process so far.

you've got a good base and framework going. once you plot out all that musculature you can go back through and start softening it up, adding some fat on top of the muscles. Right now he's a bit too cut all over
i notice from the 3/4 view that the hamstring up near the butt is coming out a bit far, and also, the gluteus medius seems a bit pointy, it could use some more roundness to it.
I know a lot of this will be covered by clothing, but its nice to nail those forms.

Thanks for the crits Pete.Heres some more work on it today.
Still need to tighten some areas like the elbows and hands but soon will go over it for detail pass.

Nice model! I would smooth out the pectoral muscle definition under the clavicles. It just look a bit too much to me.
Keep it up!:beerchug:
I feel the characters knees are vulnerable maybe he could have knee pads with claws (similar to the boot). Example he jumps off a clip top onto a dragon using his knee pads to dig into the dragons back for grip while he attacks it with his axe.

Thanks Tom. A good suggestion im having a think about.
Heres some Zbrush work from this afternoon. Cheers for the tip about the
clavicle area Pascal ;)

some nice progress going here. he is looking pretty cool so far and I think you have the head shape pretty well defined. I feel as though the eyes are too big though and maybe take down the width of the mouth, it also feels a bit wide

This is looking really good. I think the eyebrow area is a little sharp though. Might look more interesting with a softer transition imho.

Nice update:thumbsup:
I like the eyes a lot and mouth feels better like this indeed. Maybe the nose is a bit pointy, I would try to add more mass at the tip of the nose (just a personal taste thing).
Also the ears could flare out a little bit more and maybe add more defined inner shapes (in the ears).
Lots of character, very cool :beerchug:

Thanks Pascal good suggestions. After posting I felt the eyes were a bit too close together, heres a slight tweak that I think improves the face and makes him a little less weird

yep he looks more generic like this, maybe the mouth corners still look too sharp, I would expect a bit more roundness there.
Like here for example, the lower lip fades sofltly towards the corners:

eyes are looking better for sure. I agree as well with the mouth corners, i think you could bulge it up a bit instead of having it so sharp. also, another thing i noticed with the eyes is that the top lid isn't showing, i think you might get some nice results by taking the overhanging flap of skin that sits on top of the lids, push that up a bit and let a little bit of that top lid show

Pretty cool model so far, I like the eyes better apart, he's got a bit of Ray Liota intensity in the stare. Directly between the eyes the bridge drops a little low to me.

This is looking nice. I agree with Peter though, it would be nice to see his eyelids a bit.:)

i agree with the previous critics about the ears, eyes and tip of the nose. you might want also to add a bit more masses to the lips and in the corners .
You are off to a great start anyways, looking forward to see some update :)

Thanks. Im pretty happy with how the head looks now. Im thinking this is the
sort of thing that could go on forever changing so for now I'm moving on to other areas of the sculpt

Nice!, I would probably get the ear lobe blend a bit more into the jaw line.
Maybe not as much as here , but you know:

With all this mentioning of ears, I thought you might want to rough him up a bit, as he seems in your concept and your model quite clean for a man that fights dragons.
here's some pictures of some boxers:

ouch:eek: "nice" references tiktok ;) I wonder if this isn't too gory though, some people might get sick after watching these.
Shall we put a warning somewhere or are you happy to keep these as is in your thread Porkpie Samurai ?

Yeah Im fine with it if you are Pascal. If you feel there should be a warning thats cool with me

Nice! It'd be cool to see some scratches on the clothing, some legacy of past fights :)
But you may want to add these in the texture only ...
Keep it up, looking cool :sw:

yeees ! , Very nice model Porkpie ! Yes clothes could be used , but i know it's a wip ( nearly finished ... but...) , very nice work , that's a good point to start some rendering tests , his face , for me , is ok ,terrific , some setup on the eyes ... and it will be fine ... can't wait , do you plan to set up this guy ?

This is turning out nice. Great job on the scarf:thumbsup:

Thanks very much,
Pascal: Im just doing a simple modeling block out for now and when its looking
good i'll resurface the clothing and then add all the details to give it that personality. :)

Like where this one is going so far Chris! Only thing I have to agree that I am not sure about is the scarf? Is it cold where he hunts if so then would more layered style of clothing fit him? Either way I know it will be awesome!
Porkpie Samurai
01-29-2010, 12:18 AM
Hey Greg thanks for the comments, just to set the record straight, its not a scarf but a neckerchief so its not to keep him warm but rather mop up some sweat :)

Im really digging the way this is coming along. I like the concept too. Though, slaying dragons, I would expect to see at least one savage *** scar on him.

Nice to see you're back on this one :)
I like the clothing except the pants wrinkles where they meet the boots, they feel very soft. Did you use some ref for the pants folds?
Can't wait for the next update :)
ZippZopp
03-23-2010, 05:24 PM
nice update chris. proportions feel nice, but i think the hands and fingers feel a bit thin and maybe tighten up the pants a bit, i think there needs to be some tighter folds and creases on the pants, all the folds feel the same thickness. the vest and boots are looking great

03-24-2010, 02:28 AM
Thanks guys. THis is the direction im going with the pants so far.

Oh I see, you could also use jockey pants as reference for wrinkles.
Try this website, I like the fact that they are white(good for modeling ref) and you have different views . Even though the fabric is probably not what you're after - just scroll down for the pants:

Pants look quite nice too
oh yes... its getting really cool...
are the latest shots out of zbrush..?
the perspective looks different...
Awesome update!! I love this style! can't wait your next update.
Are you going to pose working!? if so, you need to re-work his cloth details..I'm not sure...great work anyway!

Man you are intense! You just keep spitting out new stuff.
This last one is looking really good so far, I'll be eagerly waiting for the next update ;)
As to the gloves, some tough bruised leather ones, kinda motorcycle glows, could look sweet.

Pretty cool model and clean !! i like it
it has evolved since the first design
I'm following your threads and that's very inspiring
I'm agree with the helmet and prefer without it but that's your choice
What are you using for the rendering this time? (if you want to share)
Keep the great work up
