Hey everyone!
I thought I'd post some progress of a model I've been working on.
I started from a sketch I did several years ago while eating in a small pho noodle place (though it's quite different looking from the original sketch now):
http://www.bayardbaudoin.com/images/fullsized/phoga_02.jpg

I started modeling it around the time I sketched it, but got busy with work and forgot about it. Recently, I picked it back up and have been trying to finish it up.

Will post progress of this as it gets farther along. Hoping to make it into an entire scene.

Very cool concept, the modeling could still benefit from some refinements imo.
The fingers looks quite smooth, same for the arms and torso. Are you planning on bringing this fellow into Zbrush or mudbox to add muscle definition? one piece of the helmet seems to be crashing into the head from the side view.
Cool start!
Keep it up!

Cheers

I agree with Pascal, the concept is very nice but I think that the model would need to be refined a little bit. Especially the arms and the hands.
It would be cool to feel the underlying structure of the bones and the muscle under the skin.

Thanks much for the critique guys! This is most definitely a work in progress, so not much has been sculpted on other than the face.

I started roughing out the hands tonight:

Great to see some update in this one, I really like where you are going :beerchug:
The only thing that catches my eye for now is the RHS wrist, the deformation looks a bit odd imho.

Keep it up :bouncy:

The hands are veeery nice , for me one of the most difficult part of a body ,

Hummm, it is scary!!

It reminds me some Guillermo del Toro (http://static1.purepeople.com/articles/9/36/08/9/@/252920-des-images-du-labyrinthe-de-pan-de-637x0-2.jpg) or Brom (http://www.bromart.com/gallery/StinksofFetish/images/Grafter1.jpg)'s creatures...

Very nice job, good modeling, and great drawings too.

Finally got some time tonight to sculpt on this again. Roughed out the muscles on the body, defined bones and sinew. I clipped the fingernails for some seperate geo.

Cool detailing on the plates! Looking at the ear/side area, I thought it looked a bit flat and smooth. It might be worth adding some sort of bone structure in there.
Keep it up:bouncy:

This is progressing very nicely indeed. The headgear design works really well and in particular, the hand pose/gesture is great.

This just looks like so much fun. Love where your taking this. Its better than the concept imo. One thing that bothers me right now is how the nails get bigger in the middle.

Nice render. Not sure I like the helmet. Maybe you could give him some sort of oriental head gear like the princess in star wars, the newer(older) episodes. Its just a pity to cover up his face. It looks great and you should show it off.

I agree with Brett Sinclair, these days every character have to wear a an helmet or a armature. I would go for a more exotic approach too.

Hey,
Yeah, I know what your saying about the mask part...it does actually connect to the entire headpiece which i haven't finished yet, like this:
2307

The final rendering I was going to have the mask broken open...maybe even show a quick animation of it unlatching?

These plate will all be covered in decorative elements, with buckles and such tying it down to the head. Think it'll look cool...but hey, maybe overkill?

here's some of the unfinished mouth breath apparatus as well:
2308
I think for the breakdown of the finished model, I'll show the armor, break that away, the character...then this whole breathing machine keeping him alive.

Ok you sold me on the mask :). Just show that face in the final render and its gold. It would be cool to see how it closes up though:beerchug:

this is neat, makes me think of some of the Hellboy 2 creatures one can see in the Troll Market. He'd fit right in there :)

Dood! Bay! Pho Man looks so gross with that skin and eye color! :p! I just want to pet his nose with my finger!!

Great to see updates on this guy! Been an while so it's like some weird deja vu. Man that skin shader is lookin awesome as well as the sculpting on his face. Are you just using normal maps for now? The only comment that I'd have would be to make the seems on his helmet rounder and more pronounced in the closed position so it feels a bit more hand made. Right now it feels a little too precise.

Give me a call sometime man.

Very nicely, I love the slender build of the character. This guy looks like slightly darker version of something you would see in the bar scene in the first Star Wars. :sw:

Love the design, it has a really awesome cartoony feel to it, while still looking like a creature that could live somewhere in the universe ;)
